Through Darkened Sleepy Hollow - Erik Morales
Depicting a harrowing night of ghosts and horse chases, this intriguing work recalls the very night Ichabod Crane was chased by the Headless Horseman. The dark atmosphere is immediately conveyed as slow tromboneglissandi add to the eeriness. Suddenly, the chase is on! For a moment, Ichabod thinks he may have escaped the apparition, but we soon find out this is not the case. The chase begins once more as the piece moves quickly to itsinevitable conclusion. In Greek mythology, Boreas is the God of the North Wind. When thinking of the north wind we particularly think of the bleak wind coming from the freezing cold north, but in Homers' work we see a more varied picture. As shown in the following two stories, Boreas often does play the role of a storm wind that blows forth heavy dark clouds while whipping up the dark waves of the tempestuous sea to mountainous heights. When the stake of the fallen Patroclos refuses to burn, Achilles begs for some wind. When Iris, the swift messenger of the Gods, asks the winds for assistance, they raise themselves up with tremendous roaring and rush to Troy. Upon theirarrival they blow the divine fire of Patroclos' stake far up into the sky. When Troy was destroyed, the Greeks returned home. After many wanderings, Odysseus, however, ends up with the beautiful nymph, Calypso, who keeps him as a prisoner. As ordered by Zeus, Calypso frees him and sends him off on a handmade wooden raft. At sea, Odysseus is threatened by the aggressive sea god, Poseidon, who stirs up the winds and thrashes the waves with his trident. The goddess, Athena, stems the violence of all the winds except for the north wind, and thus it is Boreas, who sends Odysseus to the land of the hospitable Phaiakes. Jan Bosveld composed Boreas for OLTO, a music association in Loenen, The Netherlands, for which he had served as conductor for many years. Turbulent movement in both tempo and dynamics characterize this composition. The result is a whirling piece that races by in a positive manner. Boreas is in de Griekse mythologie de god van de noordenwind. Bij noordenwind denken wij vooral aan de gure wind uit het ijskoude noorden, bij Homerus echter zien we een meer gevarierd beeld. Natuurlijk speelt Boreas, zoals uit de twee onderstaande verhalen blijkt, meestal de rol van de stormwind die de zware zwarte wolken voor zich uit blaast en de donkere golven van de onstuimige zee torenhoog opzwiept.

This arrangement is written to commemorate Robert Kvam, a trumpeter, conductor and instrument repair technician.He died of cancer in 2019, only 54 years old.The quiet, beautiful hymn There is power in the folded hands (Trygve Bjerkrheim / ivind Tnnesen) was his favorite song, and the tune and lyrics are the fundament of this arrangement. Especially the line in themselves, the hands are small and weak is an important motif to the arrangement.

The superstitious schoolmaster, Ichabod Crane, embarks on a harrowing journey as he is chased through the night by this fearsome spectre. This depiction begins with a slow, walking tempo as the ride begins, gradually picking up speed as the horsemans presence is known. The horse first trots, then canters and eventually gallops in a mad dash to get away as ghostly laughter pierces the air, getting ever closer to the terrified schoolmaster.

The Hanover Wind Symphony, New Jersey, USA was founded in 1984 by its conductor Peter Boor. He commissioned HANOVER FESTIVAL to celebrate the band's 15th Birthday and the first performance took place on October 27th 1999. The piece starts with a solemn brass fanfare. Woodwinds join in and the music subsides into an expressive chorale. A climax is reached and the fanfare returns. Trumpets introduce an explosive vivo section, characterised by an energetic theme from the horns and low clarinets. A bridge passage with strong brass chords leads to a playful section that introduces a legato central theme under woodwind figures. This is taken up by the full band, the playfulmusic returns and the original horn tune is reintroduced. Finally the opening fanfare returns, this time accompanied by music from the vivo section, until a fast and furious coda closes the work.

100 years ago English composer Vaughan Williams visited Norfolk (an area on the east coast of England) to collect and notate folk songs from people of all trades and callings. Accompanied by a local clergyman, he visited The Tilden Smith, a pub which was a favourite haunt of the 'Northenders', the local fishermen, and in less than a week the composer had notated 61 songs. Vaughan Williams incorporated the best of these songs into his own music, most notably in A Norfolk Rhapsody and the Sea Symphony. Philip Sparke has composed this new suite based on five of these folk songs together with King's Lynn, a folk song which Vaughan Williams adapted into a popular hymn tune. Whynot bring a piece of traditional English heritage to any concert with this melodious new work.

The Danserye - Tielman Susato
For this collection of instrumental dances, the composer, musician and publisher Tielman Susato (ca. 1510-1570) focused on well-known folk melodies of his time. In 1551, the album was published by his own Antwerp company, bearing the title 'Het derde musyck boexken'. Manu Mellaerts has already made numerous transcriptions of renaissance works for concert band and this time he sought to create a suite of five dances, based on Susato's collection. A good challenge for those who would like to try something different!

Remembrance Day (Totengedenken) is a chorale-like piece in memory of those who have died in service. Jacob de Haan composed this work for a concert by the symphonic wind orchestra Symphonic Winds, which he conducted in Germany on Volkstrauertag (national remembrance day). The composition is based on a text from Totengedenken (Commemoration of Those Who Have Died). This narrative text is provided in four languages, and is intended to be spoken (using a microphone) ad libitum during the performance. Choir parts are also available to complement the performance.
