Napoli - Hermann Bellstedt / arr. Donald Hunsberger

Born in Germany, Hermann Bellstedt immigrated to America in 1867, where his family settled in Cincinnati. A prodigy on the cornet, he played with Patrick Gilmore as cornet soloist and assistant to the famous Ben Bolt, and, in 1904, joined the Sousa Band, playing alongside Walter Rogers and Herbert L. Clarke. Bellstedt's variations on feature the popular Neopolitan song "Finiculi, Finicula" (composed by Luigi Denza in 1880) that celebrated the funicular railway built up the side of Mt. Vesuvius in 1880. Other popular Amalfi Coast songs include "'O Solo Mio" and "Torna a Sorriento." A variety of solo textures, whimsical to intense, are demonstrated by this Donald Hunsberger arrangement dedicated to Wynton Marsalis as a part of the "Carnaval" project. A grandiose opportunity to feature your cornet or trumpet soloist! (5:45)

    Firestorm - John O'Reilly

October 28, 2007 began as a typically beautiful Southern California day. But as the composer sat at his piano writing this composition, he became aware of a major firestorm raging within a few miles of his house. Dense smoke filled the air and a steady stream of helicopters flew into the local reservoir to fill up with water to battle the flames. John O'Reilly has crafted a remarkable piece that captures the drama of this event. (3:25) , Book 2, page 23.

    CompleX-2030 - Ralph Ford

The title was inspired by the title given to plan created in 2000 by the National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) to modernize nuclear weaponry. Premiered by the Georgia Music Educators Association District X honor band in February of 2012 by the composer, the work is a mental 'soundtrack' he generated while reading a book detailing this initiative. With a variety of innovative techniques and bold sweeping musical statements, the work will clearly be well received. (5:45) This title is available in MakeMusic Cloud.

The Four Freedoms for Band - Paul W. Whear

Franklin Delano Roosevelt was the only president to be elected to more than two terms. Much of this can be attributed to his skill as an orator as much as to the troubled times in which he served. The four freedoms are, of course, freedom of speech, freedom of religion, freedom from want, and freedom from fear.

    Whispering Winds - Brian Balmages

This well-developed lyrical selection hardly sounds like a grade 1.5 and is very appropriate for upper-level ensembles as well. Brian uses some innovative effects as he portrays the sound of a gentle breeze that almost seems to be whispering. Limited range and technical demands move all focus to musicality. Strongly consider this captivating work.

Sir Roger de Coverley - Frank Bridge

Frank Bridge (1879 – 1941) was one of the leading English composers of his time. In October 1922 he adapted his popular string quartet Sir Roger de Coverley for full symphony orchestra and Sir Henry Wood agreed, at the last minute, to include it in the last night of the Queen’s Hall Promenade Concerts at the end of that month. This elaborate and colourful orchestral version has never been widely performed, but has now been brilliantly transcribed by Alastair Wheeler to provide a miniature dance poem for grade 5 level concert band. Bridge’s lively treatment of one of England’s most famous traditional dance melodies will make a fitting end to any concert, with the strains of Auld Lang Syne introduced by Bridge as a nod towards Sir Roger de Coverley’s traditional function as the final dance of a Christmas Ball, as it was in Old Mr. Fezziwig’s party in Dickens’ A Christmas Carol.

Me and Mrs. Jones - Kenneth Gamble

Me and Mrs. Jones was written by Kenny Gamble, Leon Huff and Cary Gilbert in 1972, and was first recorded by Billy Paul on the album 360 Degrees of Billy Paul. The song is about a man who has an affair with Mrs. Jones, and how the two secretly meet every day in the same cafe, even though they may know it's not quite right: "We got a thing going on/we both know that it's wrong/but it's much too strong/to let it go now." Paul has stated that he was sure the song was going to be a hit even before it was released, as "it's a song everyone can relate to", but already from the start the lyrics were considered somewhat controversial and the song were banned from several radio stations. Nevertheless, it became one of the best-selling singles of 1972 and Paul received a Grammy for Best Male R&B Vocal Performance.Well known is also Michael Bubl's version of the song, released on the album Call Me Irresponsible in 2007. It is his version that has been the inspiration for this arrangement, which brings out even more of the jazz elements Bubl has found in the song. The arrangement is quite demanding for the ensemble, and requires great rhythmic precision in particular.
