Remembrance Day (Totengedenken) is a chorale-like piece in memory of those who have died in service. Jacob de Haan composed this work for a concert by the symphonic wind orchestra Symphonic Winds, which he conducted in Germany on Volkstrauertag (national remembrance day). The composition is based on a text from Totengedenken (Commemoration of Those Who Have Died). This narrative text is provided in four languages, and is intended to be spoken (using a microphone) ad libitum during the performance. Choir parts are also available to complement the performance.

Hymne an die Nacht is a deeply moving theme by the master composer Ludwig van Beethoven. It is taken from his Sonata No. 23 in F minor, Op. 57 (Appassionata), which he composed between 1804-1806. Handel in the Strand is one of Grainger's early light orchestral pieces, written in 1911, before he enlisted in the US Army during World War I. Grainger had no trouble allowing other musicians to arrange his music to suit their needs, so Handel in the Strand has existed in several different versions. Grainger himself said of this piece, "...the music seemed to reflect both Handel and English musical comedy... as if jovial old Handel were careening down the Strand (London's Broadway) to the strains of modern English popular music." Solemnity was composed when the composer came back from his first Midwest Clinic in Chicago. Inspired by all the concert bands performing there, and all the fellow composers met at this occasion, he decided to write a kind of fanfare work, leading to a fast theme on a driving rhythm.The piece begins like a fanfare with a solemn character which gives the title of the work, the brass here have a nice part to play. Then, a new theme full of energy, using the same rhythmic motive as the fanfare theme, is exposed by the high woodwinds and finally by more instruments. The central part is a slow one, where a melancolic theme is exposed by the oboe, and finally the rest of the band. After a fugato section, the energic theme is back to lead to a brilliant coda.

Sir Roger de Coverley - Frank Bridge
Frank Bridge (1879 – 1941) was one of the leading English composers of his time. In October 1922 he adapted his popular string quartet Sir Roger de Coverley for full symphony orchestra and Sir Henry Wood agreed, at the last minute, to include it in the last night of the Queen’s Hall Promenade Concerts at the end of that month. This elaborate and colourful orchestral version has never been widely performed, but has now been brilliantly transcribed by Alastair Wheeler to provide a miniature dance poem for grade 5 level concert band. Bridge’s lively treatment of one of England’s most famous traditional dance melodies will make a fitting end to any concert, with the strains of Auld Lang Syne introduced by Bridge as a nod towards Sir Roger de Coverley’s traditional function as the final dance of a Christmas Ball, as it was in Old Mr. Fezziwig’s party in Dickens’ A Christmas Carol.

To convey the unity among their musicians, many music societies over the years, including the band that commissioned this composition, have chosen this name. The literal translation of Color Concordia is colour harmony. Consequently, the composer has gratefully used the many ranges of colouring of the concert band for the instrumentation of this work.
