Masquerade Suite was composed by Johan Halvorsen, one of the best-kept secrets of Norway. Not only was he an accomplished violinist and conductor, but also he was among the most prominent Norwegian composers in the generation following Edvard Grieg. His compositions develop the national Romantic tradition of his friends Grieg and Svendsen, but his was a distinctive style marked by brilliant orchestration inspired by the French Romantic composers. The original version of Masquerade Suite had nine movements. Paul Noble has selected five of the most suitable movements for band transcription and grouped them into this beautiful suite. The U.S. Navy Band in Washington, D.C. gave the premiere performance of this work. The first movement, Holberg Overture, sets the mood, pace, and musical themes for the entire suite, with rousing opening themes, followed by a grand fugue in the development section. This is clearly a piece for accomplished bands, giving all wind players a real workout. Each of the succeeding movements has a distinctive style, making the suite a significant addition to the repertoire of the Concert Band. Especially noteworthy is the Arietta, the easiest of the movements, and can easily stand alone with its haunting flute and oboe melodies and dramatic crescendo, the crisp solos in the Molinasque, and the final movement, which is very much like a circus march, fast, lively and short!

£499.00The Venetian Collection (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - De Meij, Johan
The Venetian Collection by Johan de Meij consists of four movements which are all a musical reflection of the four paintings of the same names from the Peggy Guggenheim Museum in Venice.Voice of Space is the first movement of The Venetian Collection. The picture on which the music is based on was painted by the Belgian surrealist artist Ren? Magritte. Along with Ensor, Permeke and Delvaux he was one of the most important painters of the 20th century.The Red Tower was inspired by the painting of the same name (La Torre Rossa) by the Italian artist Giorgio de Chirico, and was awarded first prize in the International Composition Contest in Oman. One of the towers of the mediaevalwalls of the Italian town of Soncino (home to the band for whom Johan de Meij wrote the work for) shows a remarkable resemblance to the tower in the work of De Chirico. Magic Garden contrasts starkly with the other movements of the cycle. As with the painting, Johan de Meij has tried to reflect the colourful, naive dream world of Paul Klee. The transparent texture, in which the woods play an important role, makes a striking impression throughout this serene movement.Empire of Light is also based on a work by Ren? Magritte. He was a versatile and productive artist producing over 1100 paintings and 700 gouaches. Johan de Meij used the painting Empire of Light as his theme for the last movement of his Venetian Collection. The source (sauce!) of inspiration for this work was somewhat unusual. Whilst on tour with a youth brass group, Kazys Daug?la ate a Piri-Piri salad that had a wickedly hot sauce. He jokingly told his fellow band members that one day he would write a piece to celebrate this mouth watering experience. The result was this Hot and Spicy piece garnished with a light mambo rhythm! 0:02:45

'La fille aux cheveux de lin' is the original French title of this piano prelude by Debussy. He wrote it in 1910 as one of a set of twelve. Michael Brand's arrangement for Concert Band is firmly established in the repertoire but now he has brought his orchestration skills to the Flexible format which allows many more ensembles to enjoy the subtlety of Debussy's most well-known miniature. In this selection of well-known James Bond melodies, arranger Johan de Meij has availed himself of the following themes successively: All Time High (from Octopussy, Roger Moore's last role as secret agent 007), James Bond Theme (from the film Dr. No), For Your Eyes Only and Goldfinger (from the same movie, starring Sean Connery). The most important musical contributor to the James Bond movies has been composer John Barry (1933 - 2011). Apart from the above-mentioned themes of Goldfinger and Octopussy, he has also added to his name the themes of Thunderball, From Russia with Love, Moonraker and Diamonds are Forever.
