The myth of El Dorado ("the golden one") stems from the story of a powerful chief who used to cover himself with gold dust before bathing in a sacred lake where he threw precious objects as offerings to the gods. The myth was soon relayed to the Spanish conquistadors and inspired many expeditions, although the invaders didn't bring back nearly as much gold as they expected, if any at all. Eldorado is a mysterious and dynamic work that illustrates the myth of the golden man and the European expeditions that followed. With a touch of exotic influences, the music is varied and rich. This piece was commissioned by the French Cultural Association Lille 3000 as part of their Eldorado-themed festival in 2019. Duration: 10.30

A vibrant, rhythmic solo for trombone and band. La Chica sin Nombre was written in March 2020 at the request of Brett Baker. He wanted something in Latin style so I chose to go for a Mambo-type dance piece. This obviously works best with band accompaniment where I would always ask for Conga drums and Mambo Bell/Timbales rather than drum kit. The piece needs to be played with an appropriate feel for Latin music. It should sound light and easy to play but has a few tricky moments! Duration: 4.15

Frank Bridge (1879 - 1941) was one of the leading English composers of his time. In October 1922 he adapted his popular string quartet Sir Roger de Coverley for full symphony orchestra and Sir Henry Wood agreed, at the last minute, to include it in the last night of the Queen's Hall Promenade Concerts at the end of that month. This elaborate and colourful orchestral version has never been widely performed, but has now been brilliantly transcribed by Alastair Wheeler to provide a miniature dance poem for grade 5 level concert band. Bridge's lively treatment of one of England's most famous traditional dance melodies will make a fitting end to any concert, with the strains of Auld Lang Syne introduced by Bridge as a nod towards Sir Roger de Coverley's traditional function as the final dance of a Christmas Ball, as it was in Old Mr. Fezziwig's party in Dickens' A Christmas Carol.

This piece was originally used on the RAF Massed Bands Concert Tour in 2002 when we were commemorating the role of RAF Bomber Command in World War II. It comprises the central theme of the fanfare ?€Shining Sword?€ which was commissioned for the same commemoration. In the concerts this music was played underneath a recitation of the Noel Coward poem ?€Lie in the dark and listen?€ which he composed at night while listening to the sounds of RAF bombers flying overhead on their way to Cologne.Duration: 3.35

Christmas is the time of the year where everyone comes together, and peace, family and friendship bonds are strengthened. When selecting repertoire for your Christmas concert, it's difficult to find new arrangements that are both challenging and fun to work on, as well as fun for the audience. Crazy for Christmas is one of those pieces by the Belgian composer Bert Appermont. He uses canons and even fugues throughout this arrangement and foresees a spectacular ending. It is based on Il est ne le divin Enfant and Away in a Manger but refers wittily to Jingle Bells, Deck the Halls, The Twelve Days of Christmas and Hark, the Herald Angels Sing. The Splendour of Youth was one of the last pieces composed by Leslie Condon and is typical of his style: a strong melody line, well-wrought contrapuntal lines, rhythmic features and a colourful harmonic palette. He was much interested in the development of music in children and young adults and this piece reflects the vitality that such a group brings to their performance. Each movement has a central melodic theme that that has been developed to form each part of this suite.
