A Christmas Overture - Nigel Hess

This vivacious and colourful Christmas Overture, originally commissioned as an orchestral work by John Rutter for his 2007 Christmas Festival, proved an instant success with audience and orchestra alike. Traditional carols, skilfully juxtaposed and interwoven, provide the thematic material. They are, in order of appearance, Ding Dong! Merrily On High; Deck The Halls, Il Est N? Le Divin Enfant, Infant Holy, Infant Lowly, Personent Hodie, We Wish You A Merry Christmas and Angels, From The Realms Of Glory, which bring the overture to a majestic close. Fragments of other carols appear along the way to enrich the tecture of what is surely one of the most attractive pieces written for festive season.

A Festive Overture - Kenneth Hesketh

A Festive Overture is bravura in nature, with important solos for upper winds and trumpets. The outer sections are busy and colourful and frame a more expansive, but no less urgent, middle section which develops a large arching oboe and clarinet theme. The work ends as it began, with excitement and exuberance.

A Thames Journey - Nigel Hess

A Thames Journey is a 10-minute work which follows the journey of the river Thames, from its origins as a few drops of water in Wiltshire to the point where it meets the open sea. Hess draws upon many musical links along the Thames, such as an old Wiltshire melody, morris dancing in Oxfordshire, boating songs from Berkshire. With such rich and diverse sources of music across several counties and centuries, this has quite understandably become one of Hess's most popular wind band works to date.

    African Dances - Kit Turnbull

African Dances is a continuous work for solo clarinet and wind ensemble consisting of five individual sections. The basis for the piece is the clarinet's construction from the wood of the African blackwood tree, and its subsequent development into the instrument we know today. Each movement draws on different aspects of Pan-African music, ranging from the styles and forms of the African choral tradition, through to the complex cross-rhythms and patterns that characterise so much of the music of Africa.
