In Greek mythology Aeolus was called 'god of the winds.' Legend has it he was visited by Odysseus and his crew, and that he provided for a west wind to carry them home. The E-flat major scale is fully exploited in this skilfully composed and orchestrated melody, whose brief excursions into foreign tonal centres are clearly notated with accidentals rather than new key signatures. With grateful ranges and limited technical demands throughout, dramatic impact is achieved through a variety of dynamic levels and non-harmonic tones.Duration: 2.30

Written as a commission by the Stichting de Inrichting foundation of Wijk bij Duurstede (the Netherlands), Rob Goorhuis Requiem voor de mens (Requiem for Man) on lyrics by Andr? van Zwieten was composed in the year 2001. This work for choir and wind-band greatly impressed the audience, whilst its composer remained obsessed by its war theme. When he subsequently heard that the Rundfunk Blasorchester from the German town of Leipzig -a place not far from Colditz - was to dedicate a CD to his work, Rob Goorhuis got the idea to process some of the themes from his Requiem for Man into an instrumental composition about the famous Colditz castle. a place still bearing the scars of war. From 1933 to 1934, the castle was a Schutzhaftlager. During the Second World War, it was used as a prison for senior officers. From this prison, many escapes were undertaken, which even resulted in the castle being nicknamed The Escape School. In the seventies, a television-series about this period made the castle very well-known with the public at large.The despondent tone of the opening theme underscores the sadness caused by wars and violence. Nevertheless the works ending is hopeful and triumphant. Peace is celebrated, but with the hope for a lasting peace sadly remaining a topical issue to the present moment. 09:30

Jubelklnge (Concert Band - Score and Parts)
Ernst Uebel (1882-1959) was born in Klingenthal in Vogtland (Germany), where he spent most of his life working as an instrument maker and conducted the municipal concert band, a task he performed for more than 30 years. In the year 1926 Ernst Uebel composed the march Jubelkl?nge and gained worldwide fame with it. The march, with its beautiful melodies and exciting drive, was played at many occasions around the world including the coronation festivities for Queen Elizabeth II in London and the Winter Olympics in Sapporo. In this arrangement the march has been adapted to suit the demands of a modern concert band whilst successfully maintaining the traditional character of the original. 04:15

Purcell Variants is based on Purcell's Queen Mary's Funeral Music, which consists of four canzonas, two elegies and an anthem.The first movement begins by sounding some of Purcell's original music in the trombones and horns, underpinned by a timpani roll with the woodwind articulating the beginnings and endings of the phrases. This leads into a cadenza for trumpet and alto saxophone before the movement heads in different directions, leading us to its mysterious end, where the original music is sounded this time in the 'stabs' of the clarinets and alto saxophone.Originally composed for the funeral of Queen Mary in 1695, Purcell's original funeral music was used later that same year for Purcell's own funeral - he died aged only 34. The second movement is an elegy, inspired by this story. After an introduction (a disjointed last post), the main melody of the movement is introduced by the solo euphonium, with other solo roles for flute, oboe and alto saxophone. This is then taken over by the trumpets who lead us into the middle section of the movement. This is a quasi funeral march, inspired by the image of Purcell's coffin being taken to its final resting point. The main melody returns in the flute, oboe and alto saxophone, this time more elaborated. The movement ends with a snare drum fading away - perhaps a metaphor.The Finale is a fast and furious movement combining thematic material from the two previous movements with new rhythmical ideas. This takes us through to the final passage - the triumphant return of Purcell's original theme.Duration: 13.00

Composer Modest Moussorgsky (1839-1881) came from the prosperous environment of Russian nobility. In 1865, after his officer's education, he joined the guard's regiment in St. Petersburg. Here he met a number of well-known colleague-composers, including Balakirev, Cui, Rimsky- Korsakov and Borodin. They strived to develop a "classical style" of composing while at the same time retaining a strong Russian influence. His opera Boris Godunov tells the tale of Boris, who with the support of the people, declared himself Tsar, but totally fell short of the role. The opera became popular in the re-orchestrated version produced by Rimsky-Korsakov in 1896. Around 1540 Tielman Susato, the Belgium trumpet player and composer, established himself in Antwerp as a printer of music. In 1551 he brought out The Third Little Music Book, a collection of instrumental dances. Most of these are arrangements, possible by Susato himself, of popular dance tunes. In keeping with sixteenth-century practice, this book details no specific instrumentation; something to be worked out by the players with whatever available means. Doubtless many of the dances were performed on wind instruments at festive outdoor events. The date of Susato's birth is unknown but estimated to be around 1500. The same applied to his death, which is thought to be somewhere between 1561-64.The third Little Music Book gives several examples of the traditional sixteenth-century genre, the dance pair, a predecessor of the Baroque suite. In such a pair the first dance was often in slow or moderate duple time, the second in quick triple time. This is the case in the pair presented here, which consists of a lively round dance followed by a Hop Up or saltarello.Titles in the Prelude Series are specifically scored for bands with few, if any, bass instruments but will sound well on larger ensembles. The bass line is playable by any combination of bass clarinet, bassoon, baritone saxophone, trombone, euphonium or tuba; in the event that none of these is available, the part for trombone/euphonium (B flat TC) can be played by tenor saxophone. The tuned percussion part is entirely optional and can be played by any available instrument(s). Each piece also includes a preliminary exercise. This is always in the same key as the accompanying piece and consists of a scale and chord progression that can be used for improving ensemble, balance, intonation and instrumental facility by changing tempo, articulation and dynamics.Duration: 2.00

The Russian ballet director Sergei Diaghilev commissioned many composers to write music for the theatre. This was what caused Serge Prokofiev to compose the four part Scytische Suite (also known as Ala and Lolli) in 1916, from which The Enemy God and the Dance of the Spirits can be heard on this CD. This suite is one of Prokofiev's first works, and received negative criticism following its first performance on account of its being "uncivilised". Prokofiev himself wrote after this first performance "...The timpani player beat the skin of the timpani to tatters, and the whole orchestra voiced a protest. A cellist complained that he only put up with the violence, created by the blaring brass, on account of his sick wife and three children...".Duration: 3:00
