Elgar's Variations for orchestra were written during 1898-9; they are dedicated "To my friends pictured within" Each of the 14 variations is a musical portrait to one of the composer's friends. Over the 17 bar theme which inspired the Variations, Elgar wrote the word ENIGMA. Later he said, "The ENIGMA I will not explain - its "dark saying" must be left unguessed" In Variation VIII W.N. is Winifred Norbury. In 1897 local friends organised a choral and orchestral society for Elgar to conduct. The secretaryship of The Worcester Philharmonic, as the society was called, was shared by two ladies, of whom W.N.. was one She has been described as "very sedate and calm, rather like a kind governess with Elgar, but had a sense of humour - and a laugh, rather like a deep bell". Variation IX Nimrod is Elgar's deeply felt tribute toA.J.Jaeger, his German-born friend who worked for the publisher Novello and Co. His sincere support meant a great deal to Elgar. Jaeger, in German, means "hunter". Elgar concealed this in the nickname Nimrod. The variation has become extremely popular and is often played on thoughtful occasions. In this arrangement, either W.N. or Nimrod can be played alone. However, in the Variations they are linked by Elgar in an inspired manner.

Amazing Grace is one of the most well-known spiritual songs known to date. Claude T. Smith cleverly created this band setting forming variations throughout. This work was commissioned by the concert band Da Capo Leeuwarden from the Netherlands, which was linked with the Dutch postal service PTT up until 1995. Mercury happens to be the messenger of the gods, a kind of mailman, one could say. Yet the composer did not choose the god but the planet Mercury as his source of inspiration for this work in four uninterrupted movements. He created a multifaceted work in which the mysterious celestial body is represented, as well as a number of space missions exploring it. The Suite Siciliana, a 7-movement piece - Intrada, Pavana, Gavotta, Barcarola, Tambourin, Siciliana, Tarantella - is characterised by contrasting rhythms and tempo, and consists of these 7 dances. The musical form, typical of the Baroque period, refers to some traditional expressions of art from the land of Sicily: ranging from the rich architecture of the Sicilian Baroque to the colourful majolica ceramics and the characteristic puppets, the "pupi", which narrate a secular tradition. To mark its centenary, the Musikgesellschaft Hinterkappelen-Wohlen decided to commission a light-hearted work comprising different styles brought together in one setting. With this in mind, Marc Jeanbourquin composed a piece with a theme based on a short 5 note ascending motif. He developed this theme in various styles: funk, ballad, Celtic and, finally, rock. For All the Saints was written as a processional hymn by the Anglican Bishop of Wakefield, William Walsham How. The setting by Vaughan Williams was included in The English Hymnal which was published in 1906 for the Church of England by Oxford University Press. The music editor was composer and music historian Ralph Vaughan Williams. This hymnal used his new setting which he called Sine Nomine (literally, without name) in reference to its use on the Feast of All Saints, 1 November (or the first Sunday in November, All Saints Sunday). It has been described as one of the finest hymn tunes of the 20th century. This arrangement adheres in form to the original RVW orchestration, including all eight verses and an optional organ part, which is the standard format in many hymnals. It may be performed as accompaniment to a congregational hymn, with choir, or as a band piece alone.
