Farewell Song has been taken from Der Trompetervon S?ckingen by Victor E. Nessler (1841-1890). Thisopera tells the sentimental story of a plain musicianwho is eventually allowed to marry the daughter ofa baron. From the first performance in 1884, thisopera was well liked - not so much because of thestory but because of its musical features. Impressivetrumpet solos, drinking songs and dance scenes werethe ingredients that enthralled audiences throughoutEurope. Today, only the farewell song called JungWerner's Abschied, also known as Beh?t' dich Gott,has remained an absolute winner. Wil van der Beekhas written a fine arrangement of this entitledFarewell Song. It has also appeared as a vocal setting, but has now been faithfully transcribed for wind band by Brian Bowen and we are all sure that this will prove to be a popular addition to the repertoire.

Program NotesToccata - Oh the blessed Lord was first conceived as a brass sextet and remained in that form until the early 1970s when it was amplified to full brass band instrumentation. Now its further amplification to Wind Band it is hoped that it will be enjoyed by an even greater audience and many more performers.Whilst it is not easy to play, the music, once mastered, is something that bands enjoy. It will be evident to the discerning that this close-knit work is based on the verse of an adaption of the old spiritual, "Oh, dem golden slippers," the text beginning, "Oh the blessed Lord, He has saved my soul." The figures are derived therefrom.The absence of percussion is the express intention of the composer.

Capriccio - Gustav Holst
Holst composed this short, light-hearted but tuneful work in 1932, while on a visit to the USA, for Nathaniel Shilkret's concert jazz band. He was asked to use a folk tune but invented one of his own. The piece was not performed and remained in manuscript. This version for wind band was arranged by John Boyd with the approval of Imogen Holst.

£67.00A Joyful Noise - Steven Rosenhaus
"A Joyful Noise" was originally commissioned for 2 F horns. The title comes from Psalm 100, which begins (in English) "Make a joyful noise to the Lord, all the earth!" In early 2022, composer Steven Rosenhaus followed up on a suggestion to make the music, originally for two horns and organ, available to more musicians; he rescored it for two euphoniums or trombones and band, changing nothing substantial except transposing the work to better fit the new ensemble. Though the 1st trumpet's highest note is G and the range of the instruments stay pretty much within the range of a grade 3, the composition is quite syncopated, thus moving its grade level to a 4. This is a great work to explore these rhythms while staying within an accessible range for your band.

This piece was composed in 2022 as a commission work for the 50th regular concert of the Takamatsu First Senior High School Symphonic Wind Ensemble in Kagawa Prefecture, Japan, and was performed for the first time in the world by the same group under the direction of Koji Ishikawa. The high school in question is a prestigious school that has produced many excellent musicians. When Satoshi Yagisawa was asked to compose a piece that could be played at the opening of every concert, he named it Antipasto, which means 'appetizer' in Italian cuisine. This humorous work, which likens a concert to a restaurant course meal, condenses the composer's typically flamboyant and dramatic music into a digestible whole of about three and a half minutes.Duration: 4.00
