As with Gladness Men of Old is an Epiphany hymn, written by William Chatterton Dix on 6 January 1859 (Epiphany) while he was ill in bed. Though considered by many as a Christmas carol, it is found in the Epiphany section of many hymnals and still used by many churches. The music was adapted by William Henry Monk in 1861 from a tune written by Conrad Kocher in 1838. The hymn is based on the visit of the Biblical magi in the Nativity of Jesus. The hymn used Matthew 2:1-12 as a theme to compare the journey of the Biblical magi to visit the baby Jesus to each Christian's personal pilgrimage and as a reminder that it is not the value of the gifts, it is the value of giving and adoration to Jesus that is what Christians should seek. It is the only well-known Epiphany hymn or carol about the Biblical magi that avoids referring to them as either magi or kings and does not state how many there were. This arrangement represents one in the Series of Band Arrangements compatible with David Willcocks' Carols for Choirs.

Six miniatures based on animals from the Japanese 'Junishi'. Zodiac Dances was commissioned by the Izumiotsu City Band, Osaka, Japan to celebrate their 50th anniversary. Sparke had previously written the piece, Prelude to a Celebration for the band, and in composing a new piece for their 50th anniversary wanted to personalise it to reflect the band's history. He chose to write a set of six dance-miniatures based on the decades following the band's foundation and the equivalent signs from the Japanese 'Junishi'. During the piece, all aspects of true musicianship come to the surface. Energetic playing, phrasing, melodic music making, technique and a spectacular finale make this work a perfect test or concert work! Duration: 11.00

This piece was originally used on the RAF Massed Bands Concert Tour in 2002 when we were commemorating the role of RAF Bomber Command in World War II. It comprises the central theme of the fanfare ?€Shining Sword?€ which was commissioned for the same commemoration. In the concerts this music was played underneath a recitation of the Noel Coward poem ?€Lie in the dark and listen?€ which he composed at night while listening to the sounds of RAF bombers flying overhead on their way to Cologne.Duration: 3.35

The tune surfaces three times in the movie, first during the opening title music, then as the feature number by Gene Wilder as he leads his assembled golden ticket winners into the chocolate room, and finally, as part of the "Wonkavator" music at the end. In taking a lateral look at Bizet's famous Farandole, I decided to omit the full opening statement of the old Provencal tune Marcho dei Rei (March of the Kings), opting instead to make oblique references to it. The combination of this old Christmas song with another traditional Provencal Melody Danso dei Chivau-Frus (Dance of the Hobbyhorse) originally made by Bizet's friend Ernest Guiraud when he compiled Suite No.2 from Bizet's music to the play L'Arlesienne.The farandole is a traditional Provencal dance in which men and women hold hands in a chain and wind through the streets following a musician playing pipe and tabor. In the case of Danso dei Chivau-Frus, the lead dancer would wear a horse's head made of papier mache or something similar.I have attempted to stay true to the spirit of the Farandole and the contrapuntal devices added by Guirand while adding a few touches of interest and harmonic colour here and there.- Rob Wiffin
