This work was commissioned by the concert band Da Capo Leeuwarden from the Netherlands, which was linked with the Dutch postal service PTT up until 1995. Mercury happens to be the messenger of the gods, a kind of mailman, one could say. Yet the composer did not choose the god but the planet Mercury as his source of inspiration for this work in four uninterrupted movements. He created a multifaceted work in which the mysterious celestial body is represented, as well as a number of space missions exploring it. Franco Cesarini has written this piece for concert band as a tribute to the town of Bisacquino (Palermo, Italy) of which he is an honorary citizen. The Suite Siciliana, a 7-movement piece - Intrada, Pavana, Gavotta, Barcarola, Tambourin, Siciliana, Tarantella - is characterised by contrasting rhythms and tempo, and consists of these 7 dances. The musical form, typical of the Baroque period, refers to some traditional expressions of art from the land of Sicily: ranging from the rich architecture of the Sicilian Baroque to the colourful majolica ceramics and the characteristic puppets, the "pupi", which narrate a secular tradition. The Last Queen of Egypt. Queen Cleopatra ruled Egypt for over 20 years. She is one of antiquity's best-known women, in particular because of her relationships with Julius Caesar and, above all, Mark-Anthony, but also because the cause of her death remains a mystery. The work is split into three parts and performed without breaks. The first section begins with a bright introduction representing Mark-Anthony. Dynamic in nature and reminiscent of military music, this characterises the Roman general. But soon after, another theme emerges, softer and more melodic, symbolising Cleopatra's femininity. The two characters then combine on a faster tempo. The middle section of the work depicts the love that Mark-Anthony and Cleopatra feel for each other. This passionate relationship lasted ten years and produced three children. This is expressed by a warm and intense theme, just like the beauty of the Egyptian queen. The third and last section opens in a determined and military mood. Mark-Anthony and Cleopatra were often apart, the Roman general was often away on a campaign. They met up in Alexandria to celebrate their triumph. But, as the targets of the jealousy and ambition of Octavius, Julius Caesar's son, the lovers are trapped and await the inevitable conquest of Egypt by the Romans. When Mark-Anthony heard the false news that Cleopatra had committed suicide, he ended his own life. The Queen of Egypt, for her part, was imprisoned shortly afterwards. The two lovers remain one of History's most famous couples. This piece was commissioned by the Wind Orchestra of the town of Antony, near Paris, directed by Philippe Rossignol, to mark its 90th anniversary. Duration: 10.00

To mark its centenary, the Musikgesellschaft Hinterkappelen-Wohlen decided to commission a light-hearted work comprising different styles brought together in one setting. With this in mind, Marc Jeanbourquin composed a piece with a theme based on a short 5 note ascending motif. He developed this theme in various styles: funk, ballad, Celtic and, finally, rock. Everything comes together at the end of the piece with this magical ascending motif. Will the musicians conjure and retain a magical spirit full of energy and vitality through playing Magic Feeling? For All the Saints was written as a processional hymn by the Anglican Bishop of Wakefield, William Walsham How. The setting by Vaughan Williams was included in The English Hymnal which was published in 1906 for the Church of England by Oxford University Press. The music editor was composer and music historian Ralph Vaughan Williams. This hymnal used his new setting which he called Sine Nomine (literally, without name) in reference to its use on the Feast of All Saints, 1 November (or the first Sunday in November, All Saints Sunday). It has been described as one of the finest hymn tunes of the 20th century. This arrangement adheres in form to the original RVW orchestration, including all eight verses and an optional organ part, which is the standard format in many hymnals. It may be performed as accompaniment to a congregational hymn, with choir, or as a band piece alone.

Folk hero Billy Miner (the Grey Fox) was the last of the old-time bandits. He was noted for his unusual politeness and is believed to be the originator of the phrase, "Hands up!" This composition is like a mini movie score and starts with the Billy Miner ragtime theme, followed by a train robbery, his capture, and final release. The artful interplay between sections gives this piece the sophisticated sound and intensity of a much more advanced work.Duration: 3:30

This piece came about as a Christmas gift for Valentin, the composers' youngest son. Valentin--more commonly Valentine in English--is also the patron saint of lovers. He is said to have been a poor priest who healed a blind girl, and gave flowers from his garden to those who sought help and comfort. Saint Valentine's day has been celebrated in February each year since the 14th century as a day devoted to love. This work is written in the style of a chorale and has a light touch of romance! This piece was commissioned by Matsudo Citizen Wind Orchestra for their 30th anniversary concert and premiered by the band conducted by Kenichiro Hasunuma in July 2009. This piece is typical of Satoshi Yagisawa in that it depicts a magnificent spectacle. This one is set in ancient Egypt and is based on the story depicted in the famous film "The Ten Commandments" (1956, directed by Cecil B. DeMille). One day Moses, who was raised by the rich royal family, found out that he was originally Hebrew. The Hebrews had been forced to live as slaves. Ramses, the prince directly descended from the Pharaoh, envied Moses' strength and popularity. After internal argument Moses decides to deliver the Hebrew from the Pharaoh's tyranny and escape from Egypt with them.The music starts with brilliant royal fanfare and depicts magnificent architecture, the Hebrew people forced into hard labour, and the slaves escaping from the Pharaoh's tyranny. At the climax they are at crisis point, trapped by the sea. Moses waves his staff and the miracle happens; the sea parts and Hebrew people successfully escape. Following on from Perseus - A Hero's Quest in the Heavens, this work Moses and Ramses is another piece written in the dramatic style favoured by Satoshi Yagisawa.Duration: 9:30

The German composer Johannes Brahms (1833-1897) wrote his Academic Festival Overture in the summer of 1880, together with the Tragic Overture. The occasion was the honorary degree which Brahms had received a year before from the University of Breslau. Initially, Brahms had sent a thank-you note, but he was expected to express his gratitude with a composition. The premiere took place on 4 January, 1881 - conducted by the composer himself - in Breslau. For this sparkling work, Brahms used various German student songs as a basis in an inventive way - and a little jestingly. Owing to the accessible development, lyrical warmth, humour, and persuasiveness, the Academic Festival Overture is still a popular concert work. This transcription for concert band, which has been written by Tohru Takahashi, does justice to the original composition.Duration: 9:45

The name of Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750) is inextricably connected to the German city of Leipzig. This modest and very dutiful master composer worked like a diligent civil servant. From 1723 until his death in 1750, he was cantor of the Thomaskirche in Leipzig. Since the beginning of the 20th century, the Bach Festival takes place in this city every year. The hallmark of Leipzig is internationality that every year, soloists come from far and near to perform the baroque music again. The Bach Festival inspired the Dutch composer Henk Hogestein to write Memories of Leipzig, which is based on a theme from one of Bach's arias.Duration: 2:15
