Motown is much more than a record company. From its humble beginnings in 1959, it has become a sound, a style, a whole movement. Founder Berry Gordy, Jr. had no idea what lay ahead over the following decades as he began producing records with the likes of The Jackson 5, Marvin Gaye, Diana Ross, Stevie Wonder, Lionel Richie, and many others. Motown Story is a tribute to the unique Motown-sound and contains optional parts for piano/keyboard and the electric or bass guitar. Jan Cober is famed worldwide as a conductor for wind orchestras of renown. He also produces transcriptions for carefully selected works from the classical repertoire. The Russian composer Vasily Sergeyevich Kalinnikov (1866-1901) has never enjoyed great fame, probably due to his short life. Jan Cober discovered this work through intensive research and his transcription has given it a second life on the concert stage.

Camille Saint-Saens "grande fantasie zoologique" is a collection of 14 short movements, each with a specific animal subject. Performed now by the symphony, this suite was originally scored for two pianos and chamber orchestra. Yo Goto consulted Saint-Saens' score to set these nine movements for concert band. For humor, color and clarity he added piano and various percussion. Also, phrases were added for continuity and impact, particularly in the "Final".

In 1880, Edvard Grieg composed twelve song poems by Aasmund Olavsson Vinje. He arranged two of these songs for String Orchestra published under the title of Two Elegiac Melodies, Op. 34. These two deeply meloncholy pieces were titled The Wounded Heart and Last Spring. The latter of these two titles inspired Tohru Takahashi to produce this expressive and sensitive transcription for Concert Band, which will make a fantastic encore piece for any concert.

The German composer Joseph Ignaz Schnabel (1767-1831) was a descendant of a musical family. During his lifetime he occupied several musical posts including Violinist, Organist, Concertmaster, Conductor, Music Teacher and managing director of the Royal Institute for Church Music. Schnabel composed masses, hymns, vespers, military music and a clarinet concerto. His choir work Transeamus usque Bethlehem is still widely performed and Wil van der Beek has produced this excellent arrangement for concert band which does justice to the original.

This psychotic poete maudit lived in the realms of his imagination, where he identified himself with fairy-tale princes and Oriental heroes. In Nerval's Poems, Jacob de Haan has composed the themes directly to the rhythm of the texts. Thus the work can be performed instrumentally or with a vocal soloist or unison choir.
