Around 1540 Tielman Susato, the Belgium trumpet player and composer, established himself in Antwerp as a printer of music. In 1551 he brought out The Third Little Music Book, a collection of instrumental dances. Most of these are arrangements, possible by Susato himself, of popular dance tunes. In keeping with sixteenth-century practice, this book details no specific instrumentation; something to be worked out by the players with whatever available means. Doubtless many of the dances were performed on wind instruments at festive outdoor events. The date of Susato's birth is unknown but estimated to be around 1500. The same applied to his death, which is thought to be somewhere between 1561-64.The third Little Music Book gives several examples of the traditional sixteenth-century genre, the dance pair, a predecessor of the Baroque suite. In such a pair the first dance was often in slow or moderate duple time, the second in quick triple time. This is the case in the pair presented here, which consists of a lively round dance followed by a Hop Up or saltarello.Titles in the Prelude Series are specifically scored for bands with few, if any, bass instruments but will sound well on larger ensembles. The bass line is playable by any combination of bass clarinet, bassoon, baritone saxophone, trombone, euphonium or tuba; in the event that none of these is available, the part for trombone/euphonium (B flat TC) can be played by tenor saxophone. The tuned percussion part is entirely optional and can be played by any available instrument(s). Each piece also includes a preliminary exercise. This is always in the same key as the accompanying piece and consists of a scale and chord progression that can be used for improving ensemble, balance, intonation and instrumental facility by changing tempo, articulation and dynamics.Duration: 2.00

The Russian ballet director Sergei Diaghilev commissioned many composers to write music for the theatre. This was what caused Serge Prokofiev to compose the four part Scytische Suite (also known as Ala and Lolli) in 1916, from which The Enemy God and the Dance of the Spirits can be heard on this CD. This suite is one of Prokofiev's first works, and received negative criticism following its first performance on account of its being "uncivilised". Prokofiev himself wrote after this first performance "...The timpani player beat the skin of the timpani to tatters, and the whole orchestra voiced a protest. Despite his having moved to the United States with his family when he was 11 years old, Robert Nathaniel Dett (1882-1943) was born in Canada where glimpses of his talent had already begun to manifest themselves at an early age. Among Dett's earliest titles was his Characteristic March Two-Step, After the Cakewalk. Perhaps written when Dett was just a teenager, this current edition is wholly based upon its original 1901 band publication that was arranged by Lee Orean Smith. Smith was also responsible for preparing Dett's piano solo version for publication, as well as its form for theatre orchestra and mandolin club. Owing to the fact that Smith's highly idiomatic scoring was prepared for a band of that period, this edition adapts, edits and extends Smith's instrumentation in order to make it possible for Dett's music to become available to a new generation of musicians and listeners alike. Sentimentale - Satoshi Yagisawa
Premiered by Funabashi Hiagshi High School under the direction of Shinichiro Tagawa in March, 2015, Sentimentale is an excerpt from Yagisawa's Trumpet Concerto. That work, commissioned by the Japan Air Self-Defense Force Central Band with trumpet soloist Kenichi Kurishu, premiered in 2003 with many subsequent performances. In 2013, the Concerto had its U.S. debut with Kagoshima Joho HS and Robert Sullivan, principal trumpet of the Cincinnati Symphony. I received many warm regards and compliments on the work, especially for the second movement. However, I also heard regrets that the interlude required a trumpet soloist. I remembered the words of Mr. Tagawa, who had collaborated with me on works such as"And Then the Ocean Glows" and"Hymn to the Infinite Sky". Ten years earlier he suggested that I arrange that movement for full band so that it could be more widely enjoyed. Though I agreed then, only now have I had the chance to realize this idea, as Mr. Tagawa presented me with the opportunity of this musical creation and world premier.This new arrangement was entitled "Sentimentale" by Mr. Tagawa. I composed the piece with his constant consultation, discussing grade level and instrumentation, and how the work should be a chorale etude for both concert and daily training. Written as a commission by the Stichting de Inrichting foundation of Wijk bij Duurstede (the Netherlands), Rob Goorhuis Requiem voor de mens (Requiem for Man) on lyrics by Andr van Zwieten was composed in the year 2001. This work for choir andwind-band greatly impressed the audience, whilst its composer remained obsessed by its war theme. When he subsequently heard that the Rundfunk Blasorchester from the German town of Leipzig -a place not far from Colditz - was to dedicate a CDto his work, Rob Goorhuis got the idea to process some of the themes from his Requiem for Man into an instrumental composition about the famous Colditz castle. a place still bearing the scars of war. From 1933 to 1934, the castle was aSchutzhaftlager. During the Second World War, it was used as a prison for senior officers. From this prison, many escapes were undertaken, which even resulted in the castle being nicknamed The Escape School. In the seventies, a television-seriesabout this period made the castle very well-known with the public at large.The despondent tone of the opening theme underscores the sadness caused by wars and violence. Nevertheless the works ending is hopeful and triumphant. Peace iscelebrated, but with the hope for a lasting peace sadly remaining a topical issue to the present moment.
