£116.40Rapsodie sur des Themes Normands - Serge Lancen
The Paris born composer and pianist Serge Lancen (1922-2005) studied the piano with Marguerite Long and composition with Tony Aubin at the conservatory of his native town and was awarded a Prix de Rome. Lancen composed symphonic music, choral works, ballet music and several concertos.In 1960 he met his ancient study friend Dsir Dondeyne, conductor of the Paris Metropolitan Police Band, who incited him to write for symphonic band. Lancen wrote an impressive series of wind band works that earned him an international reputation. Among his most successful compositions are Manhattan Symphony (1962) an Cape Kennedy (1970), but we should not forget that Lancen also wrote several fine works for symphonic bands of average level. So he did in 1976 by writing two rhapsodies based respectively on Breton and Normandy themes. The Rhapsody on Themes from Normandy was recorded in 1977 on a long playing record by the French National Police Band conducted by Pierre Bigot alongside with Le Mont-Saint-Michel, Hymne la Musique and Rapsodie sur des Thmes Breton. Rhapsody on Themes from Normandy is a piece that is characterized by an original orchestration and fluent melodic lines, two main characters of Lancen's music.

£116.40Cordoba - Isaac Albéniz
CORDOBAThis piece is an extract from the five part piano work 'Cantos de Espaa' (Songs from Spain) opus 232 which consists of 'Preludio' (Asturias), 'Oriental', 'Bajo la Palmera' (Cuba), 'Cordba' and 'Seguidillas' (Castilla); some of these parts are also to be found in the 'Suite Espaola'. 'Cordoba', the last part but one, seems to announce the grandeur and serenity of the composer's last works; it is as if he was preparing to retire from the hectic dynamic world. The introduction has a subdued, almost liturgical character, whereas the next dance sounds rather very solemn. Cordba is as an island in the restless stream. It is an Andalusian dance with a majestic character similar to that of the city which inspired the work. This very harmonious composition is one of Albniz's finest.

Henry Mancini studied composition, piano and conducting at the famous Julliard School of Music. He started his musical career as a pianist and arranger with the Tex Beneke Band before working as arranger for the Universal movie pictures company. In the meantime he studied with Mario Castelnuevo-Tedesco and Ernst Krenek. He soon turned out to be a great sound-track composer and finally became famous with his 'Pink Panther Theme'. Mancini has always been a fine composer and arranger of swinging bigband music as well, which can be heard in Cheers skilfully arranged for symphonic band by Dick Ravenal.

Serge Lance was born in Paris 1922. The whole of his life has been dominated by music. He wrote his first work at the age of four.Lancen studied the piano with Marguerite Long and composition with Tony Aubin at the conservatory of his native town. In 1949 he won a prize for his Etudes, and some time later he was awarded the Prix de Rome! His work as a composer is very varied and includes symphonic music, choral works, ballet music and several concertos.Aunis et Saintonge en Fete was composed in 1986, the same year Lancen wrote Symphonie de l'Eau and Ouverture pour un matin d'Automne.

The TROMBONE CONCERTO was composed at the request of Michel BECQUET and Gilles MILLIERE. Both talented trombone players had deeply impressed the composer. The brilliant work, dedicated to both virtuosi, has been written for symphonic band. It was premiered by Michel BECQUET in Lyon in 1988 with the 'Ensemble Harmonique', conducted by Claude LECOINTE. There is also a version with piano.

£61.00Marche de Concert - Serge Lancen
This concert march was originally written for the piano in 1960. In the meantime, his friend Dsir Dondeyne whom Serge Lancen had met as fellow-pupil at the Paris Conservatoire National Suprieur de Musique had drawn Serge's attention to the symphonic band. Dondeyne had been appointed conductort of the Paris Metropolitan Police Band in 1954. The Marche de Concert was orchestrated by Dsir Dondeyne in March 1961 and it was the very first time that both great musicians collaborated. The march was premiered by the Musique des Gardiens de la Paix on the bandstand of the famous and beautiful Paris public garden 'Jardin du Luxembourg' on 8 July 1961.

£131.30Hymns And Dances II - J. Slothouwer
In 1990 Jochem Slothouwer composed Hymns and Cances II. This work for symphonic band and harp (ad libitum) is based on Hymns and Dances I for piano, mixed choir and percussion. The compostition is based on the contrast between hymnlike melodies and dance music episodes. The work, in five connected parts, seems to look for a reconciliation of both melodic and rythmical elements. The initial theme with the horns and the answer of the band form the base of the first part.The second part, charcterized by a vitorous dance rhythm, is dominated by the percussionn and syncopated motifs with the brass. A melody with the euphoniums almost imperceptibly slips into the ensemble and gradually gets to the foreground. The dance and the hymn reach a real climax interrupted by a short and dark intermezzo (part three). The clear sonority of part four, a fiery tarantella with many small byt virtuoso solos, is a new contras. The final adagio reuses the previously developed ideas of part one and ends in sheer ecstasy.

£116.40Zwiefache Symphonique - Serge Lancen
This composition is inspired by Austrian-Bavarian dances, called 'Zwiefach', heard by the composer on the radio while staying at Dsseldorf, Germany in 1953. Under the spell of this folk music with its surprising changes of meters 3/4 and 2/4, he wished to compose some pieces based on these meters, without however always keeping the tempi. He composed seven Zwiefache, initially for piano and later on made an orchestration for wind band. These pieces have been dedicated to his mother, Guito.
