£150.00Prologo e Fantasia (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Walton, William - Noble, Paul
William Walton's last 'original' work of note was the Prologo e Fantasia in 1981-2, commissioned by Mstislav Rostropovitch and the National Symphony Orchestra in Washington D.C. It was first performed in London by Rostropovitch and the National Symphony Orchestra. The work consists of three sections. The first movement forms the Prologo, which is slightly reminiscent of the French Overture. The Fantasia opens briskly with characteristic Waltonian energy, and leads, after a climax, into the thematically connected final section Fuga finta (or 'make-believe fugue'). Note to conductors: orchestra performances of this work vary significantly, from a total length of just under five minutes in one performance to over six minutes and forty seconds in another. The audio presented with this arrangement is somewhat in the middle of the timings. So the metronomic markings may not necessarily be taken literally.

This work was commissioned by Midtun Skoles Musikkorps (Bergen) and their conductor Christian Breistein. This is one of the best school bands in Norway, consisting of members up to 19 years of age.Aagaard-Nilsen did a workshop with the band and recorded every idea the young players came up with. Many of the ideas from the kids became musical elements in the piece. The conductor, the person who know every member's skills best, made sure that every member got a part they could actually play.Fantasia was premiered at the Norwegian Wind Band Championships for School Bands in June 2019.Fantasia is dedicated to Christian Breistein.

Sir Henry J. Wood (1869--1944) wrote his Fantasia on British Sea Songs in 1905 to commemorate the 100th year anniversary of Admiral Lord Nelson's defeat of the French and Spanish fleets at the Battle of Trafalgar. This wonderful concert band arrangement incorporates five of Wood's selected themes: "The Saucy Arethusa," "Tom Bowling," "Jack's the Lad," "Farewell and Adieu," and "See, the Conquering Hero Comes."
