£164.95Time Lines (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Turnbull, Kit
The time line is a western musicological device that allows us to define many of the rhythms used in sub-Saharan music. It is essentially a 12-beat pattern that can be subdivided as 6x2, 2x6, 4x3, or 3x4, which generates many of the polyrhythms that are common in African music. Time Lines is a single continuous work made up of four contrasting sections which are based on various aspects of African dance and choral music. The slow introduction introduces many of the rhythms that the piece is based on and is followed by a fast section which quotes a South African hymn. Abasundu Nabamhlope (the first line of which translates as 'Black and whites, let them give thanks together'. The chorale section which follows makes use of phrases from the hymn Nkosi Sikelel' iAfrika (Lord Bless Africa) which was written in 1897 and has since been adopted as the national anthem of several countries in southern Africa. The final allegro section sees the drawing together of the various dance and choral elements used in the piece with the percussion section playing rhythmic patterns generated by the time line.Duration: 13:30Recorded on QPRM151D TIME LINES: Great British Music for Wind Band Vol.12 (Royal Northern College of Music)

Score & Parts. The idea for this suite came from left-over thoughts from a projected version of The Beggar's Opera, which failed to come to fruition. When John Gay assembles the music for The Beggar's Opera in 1727, he used popular tunes of the day and Dr. Pepusch provided orchestral accompaniments. More recently, Frederic Austin and Benjamin Britten have been amongst many composers who have adapted these melodies to their own purposes. Duration: 15 mins. CANYONS (Novello Symphonic) Extra Score - McCabe, John
Extra Score. Canyons is a response to the imposing landscape of the American South West, an exploration of musical ideas. The piece falls into four main sections. Following a build-up in the brass and woodwind, there is a slowish first section with massive chords, percussive pounding and some contrapuntal development of the work's main thematic idea. This is followed by a brief scherzo and then a slow movement which again derives from chordal material and another contrapuntal development. The fourth section is an extended Allegro Vivace, dominated by a dance-like theme introduced by the trumpets and an important motif heard at the start by the brass and percussion. After the final climax, the Adagio epilogue leads the music to a quiet close, the solo piccolo restating the cornet figure heard at the opening of the work. (Grade 4.5) Duration: 15 mins. For those not yet hooked this is a foretaste of things to come!This piece forms the final movement of 'East Coast Pictures', commissioned by the British Youth Wind Orchestra with funds from the National Westminster Bank plc. It is a suite of three short 'pictures' that were inspired by several visits to a small part of the American East Coast, an area that provides great extremes in the geography and the people.

£100.00Battles (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Dobson, Simon
Battles was written for the restoration of the epic 1927 silent film The Battles of Coronel and Falkland Islands, and was commissioned by the British Film Institute (BFI) in 2013. The work presents eight contrasting scenes as a continuous sequence: War, Introduction of Admiral von Spee, German Banquet, Building Steam/Preparing, Islanders, Call to Arms, Great Battle at Sea and Victory. The original score was written for a small chamber orchestra, symphonic brass and a substantial batterie of tuned and untuned percussion. Battles has been edited for symphonic wind orchestra with percussion and harp. Composer Simon Dobson says of his colourful score, "I wanted to keep things simple and clear, so there is a British theme, a fanfare march idea, often heard on trumpet, and a German naval theme, which is a more angular motif."
