Variations on an Austrian Folksong - Gerald Oswald

Hot off the press! Composer Gerald Oswald bases this new work on an old Austrian folksong, O du lieber Augustin! The Augustin in questions is a ballad singer and an ad lib poet who apparently wrote this folksong about himself. His grim sense of humour and his attitude towards life, that humour can get you through anything, are readily apparent in this new piece. Gerald Oswald's Variations on an Austrian Folk Song received top honours at the 2010 Austrian Composition Contest.

An Irish Legend - Ed Kiefer

An Irish Legend contains original melodies in an Irish style, written to evoke the sounds of the emerald isle offereland. The piece is in traditional ABA form, beginning with a lilting Irish jig, then a more lyrical and slow second theme. After returning to the jig, it ends with a climactic section where both themes are played together. It sounds much more difficult than it plays. The piece is exciting and will be well within the capabilities of students at this grade level.

The heart of this program is new works written by a diverse group of leading American composers who have created challenging pieces that are a true departure from standard middle school repertoire. Every BandQuest project includes a residency component in which the composer works collaboratively with a middle school as they create their new piece. Many BandQuest pieces are accompanied by an interdisciplinary curriculum designed to assist students as they learn the music and to integrate each piece with non-music studies. Fanfare for an Occasion - Philip Sparke

Fanfare for an Occasion was written to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the founding of Anglo Music Press, the publishing company dedicated to the works of British composer, Philip Sparke. It is a bright and festive work in which the main theme starts on the tenor instruments of the band before appearing as canonical imitation by all sections in turn.
