Showdown for Band was written as a compulsory exercise for the Third International Light Music Competition at St. Gallen, Switzerland in 1998. The intention of the composer was to write a piece in a light music style that would at the same time challenge the various bands, particularly in the area of rhythm. The work is divided into four parts: Opening, Ballad, Finale and Ending. Using melodies that are easy on the ear and varied instrumentation, many facets of the entire band are displayed. The solo in the middle part can be played by either soprano or alto saxophone, or even by a flugel horn. The impressive composition contains many musical elements, which makes the work anespecially suitable piece with which to open a light classical concert

£228.70The Music of Antonio Carlos Jobim - Antonio Carlos Jobim
ivind Westby has written a number of excellent but demanding instrumental arrangements for Concert Band. In the present one, he has transcribed five of the most famous by Antonio Carlos Jobim. Brazilian composer Antonio Carlos Jobim (1927-1994) grew up near Ipanema, the famous beach in Rio de Janeiro. His big break through and most creative period came in the 50's and 60's which gave him the status as the greatest Brazilian composer of all times. Together with Stan Getz and Jo�o and Astrud Gilberto he recorded one of the best selling jazz-albums of all times, an album which feature several of his most famous compositions. His inspiration includes another Brazilian great; Pixinguinha, but also classical composers like Frederick Chopin and Claude Debussy. He died in NYC in 1994 after composing approx. 400 works. He is recognized all over the world as one of the most influential composers of the 20th century.

Theo Van Doren was an Antwerp musician, violinist and composer who, despite many foreign offers, preferred to stay in his own Antwerp. He started his career as a musician in silent movies, then as a soloist, with his own string trio. Later he became solo violinist in the Flanders' Opera Orchestra and conductor. He worked with a.o. Strawinksy, Rubinstein, Stern, etc. He also taught violin for 35 years at the Borgerhout music academy, where he trained many professional musicians.

The Band Picnic - Joseph Compello
This piece takes the audience on a musical journey and introduces the students to the term quodlibet, which refers to a piece of music that combines several different melodies in counterpoint. During this musical journey you will hear: A-Tisket A- Tasket, Rain Rain Go Away, The Muffin Man, Shortin' Bread, Shoo Fly Don't Bother Me and Mary Had a Little Lamb. Malcolm Arnold's 'Clarinet Concerto No. 2, Op. 115', was dedicated to Benny Goodman, and first performed by him as part of the 'Red Rocks Music Festival' with the Denver Symphony Orchestra conducted by Brian Priestman on 17 August1974. The third movement, known affectionately as 'The Pre-Goodman Rag', is an outrageous ragtime parody with a hauntingly wistful middle section. The work has now been made more widely available in this transcription for windband. This version conmtains full score and parts.
