At the age of six he had his first composition published. He studied at the Institute of Musical Art (now the Juilliard School), but his most important teachers were Abby Whiteside (Piano) andVincent Jones (composition).Gould enjoyed an illustrious career. Scale Studies for Band - James Curnow
An important part of our Essentials of Musicianship Series, Scale Studies for Band is designed to be used as an instructional aid during your normal daily practice. Written so that the scale studies can be interlaced at appropriate times into your rehearsal, they enable you to address the scale and key considerations of your next piece just before starting that piece. For instance, if the next arrangement you will rehearse has a section in the key of G Major, you can take a moment and review the study in that key (Study Number 7). It's amazing how many wrong notes can be avoided by reviewing the key signature in an interesting and exciting manner, before diving into theperformance piece rehearsal. In the long run, this "key signature review" approach can actually save more rehearsal time than it uses. This work of festive atmosphere was written in 2000 for symphonic band, then the composer arranged it for symphony orchestra. In this piece, Lszl Dubrovay (*1943) parts with his special, hallmark concert band effects; rather, lively vibrations enriched with colliding seconds and distant overtones are brought to the foreground. The special sound is coloured by ornamental trills, appearing even in batches, and vibrating collisions in the high registers. The performance is rendered even more unique by the outer trumpets on both sides of the space. The trumpets and the flugelhorns can be divided into ten parts altogether, thus, the piece can be played by one ensemble or several bands together, as it is usual at the conclusion of large-scale festivals. This composition may be a great choice for festive concerts, since it is a solemn, innovative, and - by virtue of the free arrangement of the performing space - special work at the same time.

Omnia mutantur, nos et mutamur in illisThis piece for concert band was commisioned by Lilleaker Skoles Musikkorps, and conductor Tomas Austestad. A big thank you to Austestad for invaluable encouragement and guidance during the process.OMNIA was commissioned and written in 2021, during the global pandemic. The piece describes being able to seek refuge in music. The process started by writing a chorale for Lilleaker, which further developed into a larger contect piece based on this chorale.The musicians are challenged through contrasting sound expressions, technically demanding passages and lyrical virtuosity. During the piece, several variations are introduced, before the chorale is fully presented in the piece's magnificent conclusion.

The arrangements and compositions in these books were written by Adrian Taylor for various beginner or school bands that he has conducted over the years. Children joined these bands on the 2nd parts, usually having only been playing for a year and they then progressed to the 1st parts the following year.The 2nd parts are written without key signatures in treble clef, in B flat major for bass clef trombone and euphonium and in E flat major for bass clef tuba. 1st parts are written with the appropriate key signatures for each piece, reflecting the greater understanding and skills of the players on these parts. Most of the pieces can be played with only a few parts being covered, the addition of the other parts usually enhancing the arrangement rather than simply doubling existing musical lines. The essential parts are the two Trumpet (and Clarinet or Cornet) parts, the two Trombone/Euphonium parts and preferably also the 1st Horn part. A piano part helps to fill out the harmonies where other parts are missing. The brass parts in the wind band versions are identical to those in the brass versions.
