Made popular by the Mormon Tabernacle Choir's Grammy winning performance in 1959, Peter Wilhousky's famous arrangement of Battle Hymn of the Republic has remained a staple to this day. In this Critical Edition for Band edited by Justin P. Tokke, a new arrangement has been crafted based on Wilhousky's original orchestral scoring. To enhance playability, generous cross-cuing and doubling of the choral parts have been applied in cases where the band version is played without voices. The Salvation Army Band in my home town of Chatham, part of a conurbation of 5 towns in the South East of England known as the Medway Towns, celebrated their 135th anniversary in 2016 and this piece was composed as part of those celebrations. I suppose to some degree all composers and lyricists are pioneers, always striving to write something different and new. Well, there has been a number of 'creatives' who at one time or another have been members of the Chatham Corps and this piece includes songs from some of those. The opening motif is based on the 1st 3rd and 5th notes of the scale and after a short 'fanfare-like' introduction the tune of Blacklands (Ray Steadman-Allen) is heard in 4/4 time. This is followed by a song from Ray Jones, a former Bandmaster of the Corps entitled 'On resurrection day', a song for children's voices published in 1971 and for mixed voices in 2009. Rosemary Steadman-Allen's 'To know and do thy will' is at the heart of the link into 'Everywhere', a new setting of John Gowans' words by Andrew Maycock (both former members) which is proving to be very popular at the moment. Finally, an arrangement of this composer's setting of 'Praise the Lord' is used to bring this piece to its conclusion. It was first performed on October 1st 2016 by the Chatham band under the leadership of Bandmaster Ray Maycock.

This work is cast in four movements: Introit; Impromptu; Elegy (31.12.04); Finale. Grade 5. (Recorded on QPRM150D, CHIVALRY, Royal Northern College of Music Wind Orchestra) PARTITA FOR CONCERT BAND is cast in four movements: Introit - begins majestically with brass, saxes and percussion carrying the main theme from which most of the following ideas originate. It is repeated by the woodwinds and moves via a solo side drum into the piu mosso. New ideas are introduced by trombones, the horns and euphoniums leading to the central idea played by oboe. This leads, in turn, via full band to the closing movement. 2. Impromptu -once again the opening theme is the basis of the whole movement, using most of the composer's tricks, augmentation, retrograde, inversion and fugato, it moves along in a very confident style. A muted solo trumpet links into the third movement. Elegy (26/12/04) - this movement was prompted by the devastating events of Boxing Day 2004, the Asian Tsunami. The movement opens bleakly until a solo flute gives us the main theme over a troubled accompaniment. The opening mood returns but timpani and tam-tam herald return of the main theme for the full band. The opening theme is heard again as the music subsides but never settles. Finale - this spirited 6/8 vivo opens up with percussion and horns and trumpets announce the main idea, punctuated with short chords from the lower band. A new four bar theme is heard over a bass tread, the theme overlaps itself and quavers swirl up and down the band. Material from the first movement is heard transformed by the energy of the finale and the music surges towards a sudden close. Performance time: 15:35

As part of the year 2023, dedicated to Swiss composers, the Swiss Wind Band Association has commissioned Gauthier Dupertuis to write a new orchestration of the Overture in E-flat major by Stephan Jaeggi. Indeed, an update of the instrumentation was necessary for the interpretation of this work with modern orchestras.Therefore, the orchestration that Gauthier Dupertuis proposes and which he wanted to be faithful to the original while meeting current standards, will allow today's orchestras to performthis piece of classical-romantic inspiration.Stephan Jaeggi was a Swiss composer and conductor who was born into a large family in Fulenbach (Canton of Solothurn) in 1903. He began playing the clarinet at the age of 13, then studied music at the Basel Conservatory and attended his military training with the Swiss Army Band. Thereafter, he became the conductor of several wind orchestras. In this role, and also that of a composer, Stephan Jaeggi went on to achieve great success. His early death in 1957 put a premature end to Stephan Jaeggi's creative life. All the more reason why his work lives on with unbroken power to this day.

There are people who are capable of planning well. They live their lives in a well-structured manner and know exactly what they have to do. On the other hand, there are also people who are the exact opposite: they want to do too many things at once and are often somewhat absent-minded, which occasionally results in frantic situations. The outcome of one such situation is 'They are coming'. John Emerson Blackstone had been working on a new composition for some time when he received a telephone call from his editor, who told him that the deadline was approaching rapidly, even worse, that it would expire at the end of that same day and that he would drop by in person to fetch thecomposition! Blackstone set to work in a frenzy and completed the last details. When his editor arrived, the piece was finished ..... and got its definitive title: 'They are coming'.
