From the opening fanfare, this piece will put you in the holiday spirit! Joyful World is an adaptation of the familiar Christmas carol Joy to the World. The piece opens with fragments of the familiar carol cleverly woven into a spirited fanfare. This is followed by a rendition featuring a regimental snare part with playful harmonies. In the third section, the meter changes to create a beautiful 6/4 ballad, leading to a hint of the familiar Joyful, Joyful We Adore Thee tune before returning to the original melody. The piece ends with a spirited brass flourish.

Symphony No.3. All men are born free and equal in dignity and rights. They are endowed with reason and conscience and are to meet one another in a spirit of brotherhood. This article 1 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights forms the basic idea behind this majestic Symphony of Freedom. In each of the three movements, the composer picks another angle on this universal theme of freedom. In the first movement, Cry for Freedom, it's the Dalai Lama of which the composer is a great admirer. The second movement, Dream of Freedom, takes the photograph of the deceased three-year-old refugee boy Ailan Kurdi on the beach at Bodrum as a basis. The finale, Freedom Above All, refers, besides a Bruckner quote, to the music of Ludwig van Beethoven. Here We Come A-wassailing (or Here We Come A-caroling) is an English traditional Christmas carol and New Year song, apparently composed c. 1850. The old English wassail song refers to 'wassailing', or singing carols door to door wishing good health, while the a- is an archaic intensifying prefix; compare A-Hunting We Will Go and lyrics to The Twelve Days of Christmas (e.g., Six geese a-laying). According to Readers Digest; the Christmas spirit often made the rich a little more generous than usual, and bands of beggars and orphans used to dance their way through the snowy streets of England, offering to sing good cheer and to tell good fortune if the householder would give them a drink from his wassail bowl or a penny or a pork pie or, let them stand for a few minutes beside the warmth of his hearth. This arrangement represents one in the Series of Band Arrangements compatible with David Willcocks' Carols for Choirs.

On 11 March 1879 in the Austrian town of Neumarkt am Wallersee a huge fire broke out in a brewery, setting fire to at least 60 other houses within one hour. Due to poor equipment and a lack of water, nearly the entire city was burned to the ground. Only the church was spared. This epic piece musically depicts the events in a programmatic way starting from the inauspicious moments shortly before the disaster, throughout the fire, and the final reconstruction of the town with the help of the strong spirit and unity of the Salzburg community. The composer writes:My Trombone Concerto was commissioned by Brett Baker following an earlier piece I had written for him called Shout. The concerto was composed in Spain the summer of 2010. Once I started writing I realised this concerto was, inevitably, going to draw on my own experiences as a trombone player.The first movement was really a matter of getting the right thematic ideas and balancing the tutti and solo passages so, for formal structure, I studied the Gordon Jacob Trombone Concerto. There is a lyrical section preceding the first Allegro that owes much in spirit (but not the actual music) to The Eternal Quest, Ray Steadman-Allen's Salvation Army solo.The slow movement seemed determined to come out in the vein of a Richard Strauss song. I wanted to write ineluctably cantabile as we trombone players rarely get a chance to play the melody! There is a brief allusion to that wonderful moment when the trombone gets to sing above the orchestra in Sibelius' seventh symphony. Arthur Wilson (my teacher at college) died in the summer of 2010 so it seemed appropriate to dedicate this movement to him.The last movement is the lightest of the three in style and is slightly jazz-inflected, hopefully providing some fun for the soloist.While wanting to test the instrument, I did not set out with the intention of making the concerto difficult but there are undoubtedly challenges of technique, range and style to be met by the soloist.Recorded on Polyphonic CD QPRM161D Roman TrilogyDuration: 19:30

Commissioned to celebrate the sesquicentennial of the state of West Virginia, Forever Free incorporates indigenous elements of the state's musical heritage, capturing a robust and celebratory spirit. Cast in a single movement in three sections, the title is inspired by the state motto, "Montani semper liberi" ("Mountaineeers forever free"). The work is unified at the outset and closing by a ceremonial fanfare that is based on thematic figures from the state song West Virginia Hills. A contrasting middle section features a lyric variant accompanied by a militaristic snare drum and timpani cadence, before all thematic elements are combined for the buoyant and festive conclusion.Duration: 4:30
