Bulgarian Dances is a free rhapsody, divided into four distinct movements based on famous Bulgarian folk songs. These songs have a very old tradition and stem from both the antique world of Byzantium and even earlier in the ancient and mysterious civilization of the Thrace region. In the beginning they were monodic songs, then diaphonic, with characteristic dissonances of major and minor seconds which make them unique. What also makes these songs so fascinating are seductive and complex irregular rhythms. The composer, while remaining faithful to the original spirit of the songs, has not hesitated to broaden the musical ideas, enriching them and making them more suitable tothe rich palette of colours of contemporary concert bands. A terrific modern addition to the band repertoire.

An Olympic Celebration - Robert Buckley
An Olympic Celebration is a tribute to the pursuit of excellence and the triumph of the human spirit. This piece was commissioned by The West Vancouver Youth Band for the build up to the 2010 Winter Olympics. The initial "festive fanfare", based on open fifths moving in contrary motion, brings the athletes out into the arena. This leads to the "parade of the athletes" theme. Then comes the establishment of the "heroic theme" in the woodwinds and horns - moving through different sections - until the transition, with an alto saxophone solo and an oboe solo, leading into the "flashback" section. Here we go into the minds of the athletes and the internal and physical struggles thathave brought them to this place. The melody is epic; rich in feeling and full of heart. This moves through various moods until the introduction of the "challenge" theme; a theme stated by the horns and trombones, which passes through the different sections of the band. A restatement of the "flashback" theme, this time triumphant, takes us to a final fanfare of celebration and jubilation.

The Dylan Thomas poem Do Not Go Gentle into That Good Night was the motivation for this musical composition. While not a programmatic depiction of the poem, the work attempts to recreate the essence of the poem in sound. Theopening motive, representative of the life force, permeates much of the work. The use of sound layers - in the form of polytonal hymns - calls to mind the struggles and persistence of the human spirit and its refusal to go gentle.A substantial and dramatic work for mature ensembles. Balkanya, a suite in three parts composed by Jan Van der Roost, was commissioned by the Music School of Gaillon - Aubevoye (France) for the celebration of the twentieth anniversary of its creation. Jan Van der Roost dedicated the piece to the director of the school: Thierry Patel.As in his earlier work, Puszta, the composer makes no use of existing dances or themes in these three Balkan dances. This high-spirited suite takes its own approach to the folk music of the Balkan countries and is characterized by unique changes in tempo and spirit. Woodwinds, brass and percussion all have equal parts, making this suite attractive and enjoyable for the entire band.

This delightful work was composed in April 2023 by Andrew Wainwright as a tribute to Catherine Ramsdale, who was a member of the composer's church in Lewisville, Texas, and who passed away at the age of 88. The music is supposed to be evocative of Catherine's loving and caring spirit. Starting out in rather melancholy mood to reflect the sadness that Catherine is no longer with us in an earthly sense, the music moves into a more sprightly section which reflects her cheerful and positive personality.
