    Free Mind - Marc Jeanbourquin

For Free Mind, a light and dynamic piece, Marc Jeanbourquin drew inspiration from a gospel song, namely "Oh, Freedom", a post-Civil War African-American freedom song. In these times of crisis, the composer wanted to retain a positive and energetic spirit to symbolise the hope for better days. The four notes of the theme "Oh, Freedom" occur throughout the work and are brightened up by lively percussions, giving Free Mind a sparkling character that will lift the opening of a concert with enthusiasm.

    Lamento - Jerker Johansson

Lamento was composed in memory of Bjarne Haug Thesen (1957-2023). Bjarne came from Nord-Odal and had his musical base in Mo Skolemusikk and Nord-Odal Hornmusikk. In 1987, he was elected vice-president of the Norwegian Band Ferderation (Norges Musikkorps Forbund - NMF), a position he held until 1990. He was an important contributor to the development of the organization and is remembered for his knowledge, bold thoughts and winning spirit. Bjarne had this gift of delivering stories that fit to the issues that were up for debate, and if things started to get a little heated, these inputs from Bjarne often ensured that the debate got back on track. He was on the editorial board for the book "Norske musikkorps" which was published in 1990, and was also involved in the 100th anniversary of the NMF in 2018. Lamento was premiered on the 13th of December 2023 by Oslo Postorkester conducted by Stina Widn.

Two Movements from William Byrd Suite - Gordon Jacob

Of all of Gordon Jacob's major contributions to the British wind band repertoire, the William Byrd Suite (written in 1923) stands as his most-often programmed work. Though originally based on six movements from William Byrd's Fitzwilliam Virginal Book, this setting for developing band incorporates two contrasting movements including "The Earle of Oxford's Marche" and "Wolsey's Wilde." Like Jacob's wind band work, the music is not a mere transcription from the original keyboard collection, but rather stylized with his own inventive musical spirit for modern concert band. A wealth of material here that opens doors to teachable moments as musical textures---dynamic contrasts, articulations, scoring options---are continually changing. Bravo! Symphony of Freedom - Thomas Doss

"All men are born free and equal in dignity and rights. They are endowed with reason and conscience and are to meet one another in a spirit of brotherhood." This article 1 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights forms the basic idea behind this majestic Symphony of Freedom. In each of the three movements, the composer picks another angle on this universal theme of freedom. In the first 'Cry for Freedom' it's the Dalai Lama of which the composer is a great admirer. The second movement 'Dream of Freedom' takes the photograph of the deceased three-year-old refugee boy Ailan Kurdi on the beach at Bodrum as a basis. The finale 'Freedom Above All' refers, besides a Bruckner quote, to the music of Ludwig van Beethoven. This movement should be seen first and foremost as an affirmation of life, faith and hope for a better world.
