Imani - Sean O'Loughlin
Imani, which means faith, is the seventh day of Kwanzaa, the African and African-American celebration of family and culture. This challenging and colorful piece rises from its quiet chant-like opening (involving part of the band singing the "Imani" tune) to a sonorous major climax at measure 51. The faster section that follows makes brilliant use of an enlarged percussion section that includes a number of ethnic instruments (Log drums, Congas, Claves, et. al.) This is a terrific multicultural selection that will have many uses for holiday programs and contest performances. Duration: 6'

Flight - Gregory B. Rudgers
This is a lovely, introspective piece dedicated to the loss of a dear person. Unlike many pieces that have come out of sorrow, this piece is uplifting. At first, you will hear lush, lyrical lines that recall the memories of the one lost, but then the piece soars with a lilting 3/4 time feel that brings this heartfelt selection to a dramatic conclusion.

Cradle of Liberty
Al Hayes was one of seven pseudonyms used by famous march composer Henry Fillmore. Fillmore became so popular and was so prolific in the early part of the 20th century that he had to resort to pennames as to not compete with himself. This is yet another tuneful, well-written march by Fillmore that has been given new life in this setting by arranger Laurie Lafferty. This is the perfect march for use as a festival warm-up that is of a moderate difficulty.

Captive - Ed Kiefer
Captive is a sophisticated new piece that employs some modern compositional techniques to emulate the sound of electronic instruments with acoustic instruments. You would swear there is a synthesizer being played. The piece is based on the popular carol O Come, O Come Emmanuel, but it is not a holiday piece. This is a totally new composition for contest and festival performance that is different and refreshing and builds to an effective climax that impresses audiences.

This arrangement sounds especially great. Andy Balent's setting is so stirring that your audience will want to stand up and salute. You'll find that the simplifications and range adjustments that make this work accessible to young bands have not diminished the excitement one bit. Some sections, such as the dogfight, do push the top end of this level, but with a bit of work, we think you will be thrilled with the outcome. This is a perfect flag waver for young bands.

At times dark and sinister and at others bold and dynamic, Leviathan takes the listener on a journey along with the mythical sea monster that is found in many books and mythology. Peter Terry has crafted a bold new contest work that students will love, with all of the angular rhythms and modern sounds. Named Land of the Trembling Earth because the peat bog, which floats on water, moves when walked upon, the Okefenokee Swamp is a natural wonder. Barn Dance - Carl Strommen
It is suggested that there was an actual piece called "Dancing in the Barn" that gave rise to the term "barn dance." These were generally community events that included square dancing, Morris and Contra, and English country dancing. The theme in Barn Dance is in country-and-western style with a broad gospel-like introduction. Nothing but pure fun!
