The Wind Racers - Jeremy Bell

The Wind Racers is a fast and powerful work that plays off a single motive that continues to build in energy to the very end. Soaring woodwinds that trade off the main motive juxtaposed with the warmth of the brass section creates a unique dynamic featuring intensely fast and bright flourishes layered over a strong and bold harmonic landscape. A challenging and captivating work, the excitement of The Wind Racers will grab your attention and hold you until the final note. (4:30)

David of the White Rock - Traditional

This is an ancient Welsh air that was first published in Relics of the Welsh Bards in 1794. Dafydd (David) Owain was a famous Welsh bard who lived on a farm called Gareg Wen (The White Rock) in Eifionydd, Carnarnvonshire, North Wales. Tradition has it that on his deathbed he called for his Harp and composed this lovely melody, requesting that it be played at his funeral. Accordingly, it was later played at the parish church of Ynys-Cynhaiarn. Lyrics were later added by Ceiriog Hughes, which describe the melody's inspiration. This version for Concert Band retains all the beauty and simplicity of the original.

    Saturnalia - Ben Haemhouts

Saturnalia is a feast, in honour of Saturn, that originated in the Roman Empire (circa 800-510 BC). It was celebrated for the first time on 17 December 497 BC when the gods Saturn and Janus ruled Italy. These gods assured affluence, fertile land, good harvests and introduced writing to the people. Saturn's symbol was a sickle denoting that all citizens were equal and that no one had the right to individual possessions. During the feast of Saturnalia, the roles of slaves and masters were reversed. This varied work by Ben Haemhouts is suitable for competitions or concerts.

    Nazca Lines - Satoshi Yagisawa

The Nazca lines are a series of geoglyphs located in the Nazca Desert, a high arid plateau that stretches more than 80 km (50 miles) between the towns of Nazca and Palpa on the Pampas de Jumana in Peru. The glyphs are believed to have been created by the Nazca culture between 200 BC and AD 700. They include hundreds of individual figures, ranging in complexity from simple lines to stylized hummingbirds, spiders, monkeys, etc... The creators of the lines and why they were made are unknown. Though many theories exist, such as sun calendars or alien guidance, one by Maria Reiche, German-born mathematician and archaeologist, suggesting that "Ancient people drew geoglyphs of constellations that are most related to water" fascinated me the most. The renderings are explained as part of a practice involving the worship of deities associated with the availability of water, and thus the fertility of crops. The lines were interpreted primarily as sacred paths leading to points of worship and the figures were of sacred animals and objects to invoke their aid. Also, a massive, exactly symmetric arrow more than 50 km long was discovered when NASA launched its Landsat imagery. This geoglyph can only be seen from space. Was this also created by ancient people?(Satoshi Yagisawa)

He Shall Feed His Flock - Georg Friedrich Händel

It is interesting to recall that Handel wrote Messiah, his most famous work whilst at the lowest point of his career, suffereing from fianantial hardship and depression. It was only composing that distracted him from this misery. In He Shall Feed His Flock, based on texts of Isaiah and Matthew, we hear praise for the peace that the Messiah has brought to earth.
