Five Elizabethan Dances is drawn from the music that sets the scene and provides the accompaniment for the Ballroom Scene from Don Freund's Romeo and Juliet: A Shakespearean Music Drama for singing actors and piano. The style of the dances is freely drawn from dances found in the Fitzwilliam Virginal Book (music from ca. 1562 to 1612), spiced up with changing meters and chromatic twists of melody and harmony reflecting a more recent musical language. TROIS NUANCES is a three movement work composed by Scott L. Hines for the Memphis Ballet Company in 2004. Originally for Piano only,it is a three movement work. The two fast movements surround a blues-like second movement. While it was not the composer's initial intent to write a movement based in the blues, that's what happened and it was very appropriate as Trois Nuances was danced on thestage of W.C. Handy Park on Beale Street, the site of the birth of the blues publishing industry. Hines was given a week to present a draft to the ballet company to be performed as it's opening piece of the 2004 season debut. Once the draft was approved, he had two days to finalize it. The first and third movements reflect the hurried and excited pace at which it was composed. Excellent repertoire from a contemporary American composer! Symphonic Orchestra. Instrument Parts. Score and parts.Born in Richmond Hill, New York, on 10 December 1913, Morton Gould was recognised early on as a child prodigy with theability to improvise and compose. At the age of six he had his first composition published. He studied at the Institute of Musical Art (now the Juilliard School), but his most important teachers were Abby Whiteside (Piano) andVincent Jones (composition).Gould enjoyed an illustrious career. In addition to gaining a Pulitzer Prize for 'Stringmusic', he was Musical America's 1994 Composer-of-the-Year and recieved a Kennedy Center Honor inrecognition of lifetime contributions to American culture.A long-time member of the American Society of Composers, Authors, and Publishers, Gould was elected president of ASCAP in 1986, a post he held until 1994.In 1986 he was elected to the American Academy and Institute of Arts and Letters. He also served on the board of the American Symphony Orchestra League and on the National Endowment for the Arts music panel.
