£84.99A Copland Portrait - David Conte
Originally commissioned by maestro Neal Gittleman, A Copland Portrait was premiered by the Dayton Philharmonic Orchestra in January 2000. In March of 2015, First Lieutenant Ryan Nowlin's transcription of this work for band was premiered by "The President's Own" United States Marine Band under the direction of Lieutenant Colonel Jason Fettig. ECS Publishing is proud to offer both the band and the orchestra version. Conte on the creation of this overture: "I set out quite consciously to evoke various aspects of Copland's work by combining and recombining them within the terms of my own musical personality. For example, the first theme of A Copland Portrait combines the character of a theme from The Red Pony with the rhythmic texture of the scherzo of the Third Symphony. While composing the piece I was conscious of drawing inspiration from many of Copland's works; a melodic shape here, a harmonic gesture there, until I arrived at something that felt fresh and new to me. A Copland Portrait is cast in a traditional Sonata-Allegro form. After a vigorous, syncopated orchestral tutti, the first theme is announced in the solo oboe, accompanied by a steady eighth-note ostinato. Playful interjections are stated in the flute and bassoon. The syncopated tutti returns; the first theme is stated again, this time in the low winds. This theme builds to a colorful climax, leading into a more dissonant transition section, which gradually slows and gives way to a lilting, more lyrical second theme in the clarinet. After some modest development of the second theme, a more plaintive theme stated in the muted trumpet brings the exposition to a close. A scherzando development section follows; the first four notes of the first theme are inverted and subjected to various contrapuntal treatments. This development section ends with a return of the opening syncopated motive, leading into a recapitulation of the first theme, this time in canon, and the second theme and closing theme, broadly sung. A brilliant toccata-style coda brings A Copland Portrait to a brisk conclusion."

Torstein Aagaard-Nilsen's (1964) way of composing can be described as: uncompromising, wilful and contemporary. It is not surprising, therefore, that this occasionally causes a stir. In the middle of the Seventies a trend arose in youth culture, which was characterized by provocation, distrust of the great ideologies, and the autonomy of the individual. Punk is playful, aggressive, often humorous, and anti-everything, which inevitably leads to self-irony. The first part of Aagaard-Nielsen's composition (Introduction) is a texture based mainly on one short theme. This pompous theme breathes a spirit of cold empty plains, where icy winds sigh around yourhead. In the vehement Punk (Presto barbaro!) there is no longer any question of a theme. The basis for this part is formed by a repetitive motif (a descending minor third). This motif is alternated with very powerful percussion beats and later on shrill harmonies.

Scottish Dances is based on three Scottish traditionals: Cock of the North, The Bonnie Bank's O'Loch Lomond and Marie's Wedding. I. Cock of the North's name is used for multiple things or events. For example for a locomotive to a famous, it seems, delicious liqueur, and rallies to snowboard competitions. Furthermore is "Cock O' the North " a nickname of a famous Duke. (The 4th Duke of Gordon). In this composition Cock of the North (a Jig) is a traditional Scottish bagpipe tune, regularly played on tattoos by Pipe Bands. Not infrequently the drummers sing the text. Auntie Mary, had a canary, Up the leg of her trousers While she was sleeping Iwas peeping Up the leg of her trousers. II. " The Bonnie Bank's O'Loch Lomond " is about a sad story that took place during an revolt against the British. In 1745 Bonnie Prince Charlie had to retreat. Two of his men were captured. One was convicted and executed, while the other was released. The spirit of the executed soldier would arrive in Scotland via the 'low road' (underworld) before his companion, who had still a long way to go. You'll take the high road And I'll take the low road And I'll be in Scotland afore ye But me and my true love will never meet again On the Bonnie Bonnie Banks of Loch Lomond III. In a Scottish wedding, after the official ceremonies, there is often danced. This is called a ceilidh. For this we use traditional Scottish music such as "Marie's Wedding '. Mid dance we go back to the church, where a lovely song in honor of the couple sounds. Marie's Wedding has been recorded by Van Morrison (among many others). Conclusions is inspired by three of the worlds greatest astronomers; their lifes, work and pioneering conclusions. 1: Copernicus. Nicolaus Copernicus lived in the 15th century. He introduced the idea that the planets rotate around the Sun rather than the Earth. This was a new and controversial world view which was not accepted in his lifetime. 2: Galileo. Galileo Galilei lived about a hundred years later and is sometimes called "the father of modern science". He is credited with the discovery of Jupiter's four largest moons. His discoveries supported Copernicus' model of the Solar System, and also showed that objects rotate around other planets than the Earth. Galilei was charged with heresy, and had to recant his claim that the Earth revolved around the Sun. "And yet it does move", he is supposed to have said. 3: Newton. Isaac Newton is known for his theory about the law of gravity and how it affects motion. This theory enabled him to accurately calculate the paths of the planets in the Solar System, and was a third conclusion in the astronomical tradition. In the same way that the three astronomers' independent conclusions build on ideas that are common to all three, Conclusions is built up of three independent movements which all include references to each other (melodic, harmonic, inversions etc.) Duration: 11.00

£395.00Scapino (A Comedy Overture) (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Walton, William - Noble, Paul
William Walton's Scapino: A Comedy Overture took as its inspiration the three-act comedy of intrigue Scapin the Schemer (French: Les Fourberies de Scapin) by the French playwright Moli?re. The title character Scapin is similar to the archetypical Scapino character. His name is related to the Italian word "scappare" (to escape) and his name translates to "little escape artist" in reference to his tendency to flee from fights, even those he himself begins. The play was first staged on 24 May 1671 in the theatre of the Palais-Royal in Paris. Scapino tends to make a confusion of anything he undertakes and metaphorically "flees" from one thought, activity or love interest to another, as his name implies, although he usually will return to it - eventually. Self-preservation and self-interest are his main concerns. This is not to say his wits are without merit. He is a schemer and scoundrel, and takes a certain pride in these facts. He was originally a masked character, although later versions usually have the actor simply powder his face. He is traditionally shown with a hooked nose and a pointed beard. Scapino was composed on commission from Frederick Stock and the Chicago Symphony on the occasion of the group's 50th anniversary, and received its world premiere by that ensemble, conducted by Stock, in 1941. This faithful arrangement is sure to find its way into the serious repertoire of outstanding Concert/Wind Bands worldwide.

£174.99Et in terra Pax (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Van der Roost, Jan
This piece was commissioned by the Concert Band Vlamertinge and is a plea for peace: the title translates as Peace on Earth. This is expressed by means of the vocal contribution expected from the performers. In various places of the piece you can recognize, the words Et In Terra Pax, an appeal for peace, at first jumbled together but later more rhythmically structured, developing into synchronized massed voices. The work starts with a pentatonic theme based on the notes D, E, G, A and C (taken from 'ConCErtbAnD VlAmErtinGE' and the name of the conductor, NiCk VAnDEnDriessChe). A somewhat sad melody is developed during an orchestral climax which leads to the first explosion of sound (measure 62 onwards). Suddenly the opening measures are recaptured, albeit with a differently coloured sound: the words Et in Terra Pax bring the first movement to a close. A restless Allegro follows which abruptly stops and is replaced by a calming chorale-like passage. A narrator reads aloud the poem 'Sonnet' by the young poet Charles Hamilton Sorley, who was killed during World War I. This poem fittingly puts into words the cruelty and senselessness of war. After the expanded recapitulation of the allegro, the broad, almost infinite atmosphere of the beginning returns. Clarinet and English horn play the pentatonic opening theme once more, this time broadly, while the words Et in Terra Pax are repeated again and again by the rest of the ensemble. The composer has purposely avoided all forms of aggression and bombastic sounds regularly used in works about war. Fear of violence and destruction can be heard and felt during the allegro passages. The charged opening makes way in the end for hope: May peacefulness replace cruelty in everyday life, too.Duration: 13:45

Armin Schaer commissioned this work in his search for a new piece for the tuba. More specifically, he wanted a work that showed off the versatility of this splendid instrument, written in a musical style that is both fresh and modern, while not banishing the orchestra to a simple supporting role. Taking all these specifications into account, Thomas Doss created a work that allows stylistic leaps and is fun, exciting, romantic, and virtuosic, but does not lose sight of the thread that connects the opening measures to the very last.Armin Schaer describes his Panoptikum as follows:Panoptikum is a show of appreciation for my beautiful home and community at Lake Constance, an eventful life, the people that have enriched this life, and a fascinating instrument: the tuba. This work musically embodies the many different moods found around theBodensee - cheerfulness and melancholy, departures and longing, calm and agitation. The roles of the soloist and the orchestra were consciously crafted in a way that does not follow the usual conventions of the genre. The work should spark emotions, address broad segments of listeners, and persuade them of the tuba's ability to be a solo instrument as well as the richness symphonic wind ensembles have to offer.
