In 2004 he was even awarded a Gouden Harp (Gold Harp), which is the most important prize within Dutch music. It is presented to artists and composers who have promoted Dutch light music in their own unique way during their career. The first theme of Slava! is a vaudevillian razz-ma-tazz tune filled with side-slipping modulations and sliding trombones. The second theme is a canon, and after a brief development section, the two themes recur in reverse order. Near the end, they are combined with a quotation (proclaimed by the ubiquitous trombones) from the Coronation Scene of Moussorgsky's 'Boris Goudonov', where the chorus sings the Russian word slava!, meaning, glory! In this way, the composer is paying homage to his friend Mistislav Rostropovich, called 'Slava' by his friends and to whom the overture is fondly dedicated. The overture was written to celebrateRostropovich's inauguration as music director of the National Symphony Orchestra in Washington, D.C., in 1977. Leonard Bernstein, the son of a Russian immigrant, was born near Boston, Mass., and studied composition at Harvard. Called 'an authentic American hero, an arts hero,' Bernstein had a distinguished career as composer and conductor. - James Huff

This is a very special work, written as it is for brass quintet (trumpets I and II, horn, trombone, bass-tuba) and symphonic band, but also available in a version for brass quintet only, which enlarges the practical possibilities for performance enormously. Lancen has certainly exceeded himself in this brilliant work. Following its premiere during the W.A.S.B.E. Congress in Boston in 1987, the 'Boston Globe' wrote: 'Far simpler but its own way more original was the 'Maskerade for Brass Quintet and Band' by Serge Lancen. Its eight movements are unabashedly tonal, throughout a cheerful carnival of simple, sincere ideas worked out with skill and good humor'. The premiere was given by the Dutch National Youth Symphonic Band conducted by Jan Cober.

£286.40Fourth Symphony - Alfred Reed
Commissioned for the World Music Festival in Kerkrade, Holland, in July 1993, this work was completed in the summer of 1992, with the composer reading the final proofs in November of that year. The music is in three movements, an opening Elegy built largely on a gentle, insisting, basic rhythm first heard in the flutes under the main theme in the oboe. These two motifs are developed through all of the colours of the wind band, at times sorrowful and song-like, and at other times highly dramatic in character, before the movement finally settles down to a soft close on an E minor chord after having been heard mainly as non-tonal in structure and feeling throughout. The second movement, by way of contrast, a gracious Intermezzo, is developed from a quiet, lilting theme with just a touch of Latin flavour, featuring the woodwind colours of the band cast in 5/8 meter through much of the texture. Joining the wind and soft percussion colours here is the harp, which at times seems almost to be sounding as a large Spanish guitar strumming accompaniments to the various melodic lines. The third movement, again as a major contrast to what has come before, is a fiery Tarantella, drawing on a fugal-like theme that is developed with all of the virtuosity inherent in the modern, fully integrated wind group, and which sweeps along relentlessly to a final, brilliant conclusion both as to its own movement and the work as a whole.
