This arrangement was written for Dragefjellets Musikkorps Bergen for their performance at the Norwegian Wind Band Championships in 2019.The original orchestral work is one of our country's greatest national works for symphony orchestra.It combines Norwegian folk music with the symphonic tradition, but on a slightly different way than Edvard Grieg.Compared to the original score, I have made parts of the work more chamber-music like by making the instrumentation a bit thinner. By doing this, I hope the span in dynamics will benefit the tutti sections as well. Many works are composed with the precise aim of describing landscapes, atmospheres or telling stories. "Composizione Prima", on the other hand, was composed with the sole intention of experimenting with some uses of modern musical language. The piece is formally structured in three movements: allegro, adagio and fanfare, without however complying with any standard pattern. The main theme, "fanfara", can be heard several times throughout the piece. It is the only feature of this work that in any way evokes an onomatopoeic sound, to indicate the gradual approach through three dimensional space of a Napoleonic band (fanfare).

The medieval plainchant melody Divinum Mysterium is used as the source material for this piece, as its melodic elements are constantly varied throughout. Beginning in a slow, stately tempo as it might have been heard in a cathedral in the middle ages, the initial setting ultimately gives way to fast, driving rhythms which support more and more variations on the tune. The arch-like form of the plainchants final phrase is mirrored in the brasses three times within the piece, the most dramatic of which occurs near the end as Ancient Hymn Tune Variants reaches its exciting and triumphant conclusion.

In this fascinating piece we experience an exciting adventure in the jungle. The entrance into the "green hell" turns out to be very dangerous with wild monkeys and the roaring of elephants accompanying our way through the dark forest. There seems to be something lurking behind every tree and all of a sudden, a horde of savage cannibals appears. A wild hunt sets off and we escape at the last second by jumping from a cliff into the savage water below. Exotic birds welcome us in a new landscape and from somewhere in the distance we can hear a bamboo flute playing. This is a journey of no return.... The effects (elephants, wild monkeys, exotic birds and rain) should be producedwith much creativity - individual ideas are always desirable and welcome.
