In late August of 2005, the normally festive skies over the city of New Orleans began to change. As Hurricane Katrina approached the city, the skies promised a weather event of unprecedented proportions. Composer Robert W. Smith was commissioned by the United State Marine Forces Reserve Band of New Orleans to create this symphonic tone poem recreating and commemorating the Katrina experience. Beginning with "Blue Sky," the jazz of the historic city provides the musical inspiration. Soon, the "Threatening Sky" arrives giving way to the "Raging Sky." Finally, the "Dawn of a New Sky" brings hope as the city is reborn to share its musical gifts once again. "Promising Skies" is large work for concert band at the medium advanced level. Using the American art form of jazz as its base along with unusual percussive effects, the piece is a unique and welcome contribution to the repertoire.

SIROCCO (Concert Band) - Graham, Peter
A Sirocco is a wind that originates in the Sahara and sweeps across the Mediterranean through North Africa to Southern Europe. Taking this route as his inspiration, Peter Graham has fashioned a tour-de-force for band that features three Mediterranean folk songs. Two of the three movements are well known in their respective countries. Firstly, the fast and furious Tarantella is commonly heard as part of traditional Italian wedding celebrations whilst the Romanza can justifiably lay claim as one of Spain's most enduring melodies, synonymous with the Spanish guitar. The final movement has its roots in traditional Greek dance music, being a mixture of slow and fast versions of the hasapiko. The best-known example of the form is the famous Zorba's Dance, and in the same manner the Sirtakis sedate opening bars soon give way to a frenzy of activity as the entire ensemble whip up their own musical storm

Quirky, fun, and not too serious, this dance-like composition was inspired by the composer noticing pelicans on his way to work! The opening motif played by the entire ensemble in the first measure is fundamental for the entire work. Stated in some form at the beginning of each musical section, it even appears as a bass line in the composition. Performed at one tempo throughout, this piece emphasizes essential dynamic contrasts and the various ways a theme can be developed in a composition. Percussion drives the energy of the composition, allowing your players to develop their skills on hand percussion. Enjoy the dance!

The word synergize means to combine or coordinate the activity of two or more agents to produce a joint effort that is greater than the sum of their individual effects. Using a low brass groove with simple countermelodies above, this piece musically portrays that concept. Simple syncopation and dissonances introduce these concepts in a fun and interesting way. Here We Come A-wassailing (or Here We Come A-caroling) is an English traditional Christmas carol and New Year song, apparently composed c. 1850. The old English wassail song refers to 'wassailing', or singing carols door to door wishing good health, while the a- is an archaic intensifying prefix; compare A-Hunting We Will Go and lyrics to The Twelve Days of Christmas (e.g., Six geese a-laying). According to Readers Digest; the Christmas spirit often made the rich a little more generous than usual, and bands of beggars and orphans used to dance their way through the snowy streets of England, offering to sing good cheer and to tell good fortune if the householder would give them a drink from his wassail bowl or a penny or a pork pie or, let them stand for a few minutes beside the warmth of his hearth. This arrangement represents one in the Series of Band Arrangements compatible with David Willcocks' Carols for Choirs.
