The theme of this work is the history of the town of Grafenrheinfeld (Bavaria, Germany) in the twentieth century, a town that is now mainly associated with its nuclear plant. The German word for this is Kraftwerk, which can be divided into the words Kraft (power) and Werk (work). In this composition, it is a metaphor for the 'work' that can be realised through 'power' in a negative way (war) and in a positive way (reconstruction). Musically speaking, power also plays an important role in this work, as opposed to vulnerability, the sense of loss and the insecurity about the lost identity. Based on the text of Lied der Franke 'Kraftwerk' is a powerfully descriptive work that will add energy to any concert.Duration: 8:30

The symphony is in four movements. The first movement starts a single triangle note, followed by a guitar strum. The movement anxiously attempts to churn into action, only to be stifled repeatedly by the single triangle note. Finally, with the guitar as inspiration, the main theme gets under way, revealing an almost Spanish, or even Eastern European flavor. Ideas and themes get reworked, developed, repeated and augmented throughout the movement, before finally closing out just as it began, but in reverse: this time guitar followed by triangle. The second movement steals from an angular and shrieking motif of the first, but is presented in opposite fashion: with the warm blend of the low brass. Hints of iconic military symbolism are interspersed throughout this movement, as homage to the commissioning ensemble. The main theme is inverted and awarded to a solo trumpet midway before giving way to a brass fanfare, though not done loudly, but here muted, from afar. The low brass return at the end, fading away to nothing as the bell tolls. The third movement is merely a short interlude - a break, in almost Gershwin-like fashion - from the seriousness of the movements that precede and follow. Lastly, the fourth movement is a wild one: with mixed meters and plentiful percussion penned to propel the movement throughout. The movements' themes are all reworkings of material presented earlier. The listener will continually be surprised by the creative way the national anthems are presented. The national anthems of the nations that have become part of the EU in 2004 have already been included in this piece. Because the fragments follow each other and complement each other in a logical way, this work does not sound like a regular medley but rather like a varied concert work with interesting elements of folklore. Mankind has always had the desire to fly. Initially we tried to imitate birds to fly, which eventually resulted in the invention of balloons, airships, gliders and powered aircrafts. The first airship in the world that could fly in a controlled way, was invented by Henri Giffard. This airship flew on September 25, 1852 from Paris to Trappes. The ship was 43 meters long and flew 8 km per hour over a distance of 27 km. Other key names for the many changes and developments of the aviation industry, are the Wright brothers on December 17, 1903 with their first motorized flight, of 12 seconds over a distance of 37 meters with a homemade motorized aircraft called the Flyer. Later the same day this record was improved by a flight of 60 seconds over a distance of 260 meters. The first flight across the Channel between England and France was made by Louis Blriot on July 25, 1909. The distance of about 45 km was covered in a time of 37 minutes. In 1910, the first woman, a French pilot (Raymonde de LaRouche), made her first solo flight. She was also the first woman who got a license to fly.This march is a tribute to the many years of development within the aviation industry and gives voice of the pride, the romance, the heroism and the status of this way of transportation.
