The Barber of Seville Goes to the Devil (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Jacob, Gordon - Noble, Paul

Gordon Jacob (1895-1984), one of Malcolm Arnold's teachers at the Royal College of Music, was represented in the first Hoffnung. This rumbustious parody of Rossini's style was composed in 1960 for the BBC Concert Orchestra, which introduced it under Vilm Tausky in a broadcast concert that year. (Tausky added the opening bars, in fact, with the composer's approval, which are included in this arrangement.) The piece is a no-holds-barred workout on familiar material such as could be brought off only by a certified master of the modern orchestra with a free-wheeling imaginativeness to match his/her technical skill. Concert Bands and their audiences will get in on the fun of this rousing parody, exploring everything from a Spanish dance to a Street parade.

It turned into one of the most popular non religious Christmas songs in the world. Jingle Bells was subject to countless arrangements and here it is flavoured with a rhythmical samba style.

Listening to Paris - Mickey Nicolas

A man is strolling in Paris and muses about the capital's prestigious history, suggested by a slow waltz. He is disturbed by the surrounding noise, but anyhow the musical evocation proves to be stronger. It is much easier to cross the road when you follow a nice woman. He reaches the quaysides of the river Seine, where an accordionist is playing. The dialogue between the accordionist and the band fascinates the man and he starts to whistle the same tune. But then again there is the hell of the busy streets with the hectic traffic; the man hesitates, crosses in a hurry and some cars narrowly miss him. Finally he finds refuge in the "Quartier des Halles" district. The window shops of the antique dealers display all kinds of obsolete objects. The walk comes to and end and our man takes a last quick glance at the river Seine and goes back home, listening to Paris, a city he has fallen in love with.
