£99.99March of the Robot Army (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Sparke, Philip
March of the Robot Army was commissioned by Linda Anzolin and Giordano-Bruno Tedeschi for Campobanda 2019, with funds made available by Just Italia. Campobanda is an Italian summer music camp for 8 to 18 year olds which has a different theme every year. The theme for 2019 was science fiction, so composer Philip Sparke chose to write a robot march. After a quirky introduction featuring trumpet calls and chromatic figures, the main theme appears in a minor mode on clarinet and tenor sax and is then taken up by the full band. A change of key heralds a new theme, led by the trumpet and again repeated by the full ensemble. A further change of key introduces a legato trio melody over a rather robotic accompaniment: instruments are added bit by bit until a climax is reached. Small motifs from the introduction then lead back to a full recapitulation, revisiting the first two themes in new guises before finishing the march with a flourish.Duration: 5.00

This is the title song from The Mandalorian, from the Star Wars universe created by George Lucas. The series premiered at the Disney streaming service Disney+ on November 12th 2019. It is the first live-action series in the Star Wars franchise, beginning five years after the events of Return of the Jedi (1983) but many decades before The Force Awakens. The music for The Mandalorian is written by Swedish composer, conductor and record producer Ludwig Goransson. This arrangement is challenging for all players.Duration: 2.45

In 1917, Ole Olsen (1850 - 1927) invited all who might have access to Norwegian folk music, to send him a copy. Olsens goal was to compose a march with local association to all regiments around the country. The result was published in 1922, as a collection of three books with 23 marches. The printing was financed by the Department of Defence and distributed to all military bands in the country. In the first book, we find "Regimental March from F?rde in Sunnfjord", which Olsen arranged after motifs sent to him by Music Instructor J. Woldsdal in Bergen. Duration: 3.30

I wrote Labyrinth to celebrate the 450th anniversary for the city of Fredrikstad. The Danish king Fredrik II agreed to establish a new town further down the river Glomma, to make it easier to defend from the Swedes. The piece is a network of quotations mixed with my own pitch material. My versions of the quoted melodies are not authentic, and sometimes hard to recognize. However, the different quotations give the music an aura of tonality. For example, a dance tune composed by the Flemish composer Mattheus Le Maistre (1505-1577). The melody also occurs in the first danish book of hymns written after the reformation. Since Norway for 400 years was a part of Denmark and everybody had to write and read Danish, they used much of the same music, too. I also use regular Danish hymn tunes and quote from a religious folk song from the area around Fredrikstad. The military signals I use are authentic (for example, The Old Danish March), and I am very sure they were used in the Old Town (the fortress) of Fredrikstad. The drums quote from The Downfall of Paris. This could have been heard played by professional soldiers hired by the Swedes from Scotland. The Finnish-Swedish clarinetist and composer Bernhard Crusell (1775-1838) was born in Nystad in a poor family of bookbinders. He started studying clarinet in Stockholm at a young age and established himself as a clarinet soloist and was appointed director of the regimental band as a 16-year-old. The following year he became a solo clarinetist in the Royal Court Orchestra, which was conducted by his composition teacher Abb? Vogler. Crusell was offered positions as a musician in other orchestras in Europe, but King Gustav IV Adolf wanted to keep him in the Royal Orchestra and gave the job as chief conductor of the bodyguard regiment's band. Bernhard Crusell composed a lot of music for both orchestra, ensembles and singers. This beautiful adagio is from his first of a total of three clarinet concerts. Duration: 3.45

Nar himmelen faller ned (When the sky falls down) is the most famous song by Norwegian singer/songwriter Anne Grete Preus (1957-2019). It was released as single record in 1998 and included on the "Best of" collection "Mosaikk - 16 biter" later the same year. The song was also one of her very first hits as a solo artist. Her great career included many prestigious awards. Most notably are the "Spellemannsprisen" (the Norwegian Grammy) which she won several times. This arrangement was originally written for Preus herself as vocal soloist with Concert Band. In this reworked version, the vocal solo part can be omitted as the melody is spread out in the various band parts. Duration: 4.15

Hjem til Jul (Home for Christmas) is composed by the Norwegian singer/songwriter Terje Nilsen and recorded by him twice. First on the album record Sann and later as an acoustic live version as a duet with singer Eva Trones. This arrangement tries to recreate the calm and warmth of the original, but also to create propulsion and flow. It's important to focus on the dynamics throughout the pieces.
