Windy City Holiday was composed specifically for the Fresno State Wind Orchestra for their performance at Orchestra Hall in Chicago, Illinois for the Percy Grainger Wind Band Festival. The composer, Gary P. Gilroy, serves as the Director of Bands at Fresno State and conductor of the universitys premiere wind band, the Fresno State Wind Orchestra and Dr. Gilroy wrote this work in honor of the students who raised the funding needed to be a part of the Festival. The group took a five-day trip to Chicago and as such, had a "Holiday" of sorts in the famous Windy City with Dr. Gilroy on his first major trip as the Director of Bands with the Wind Orchestra. The work is one of the more challenging compositions Gilroy has written in some time and he wanted to compose an exciting and energetic opener for this historic concert. He also wanted the work to represent the fun and excitement his students would be exposed to in Chicago so it was important that the opener be playful and light at times.

Who can forget the legend of the ominous headless horseman as told in The Legend of Sleepy Hollow? The superstitious schoolmaster, Ichabod Crane, embarks on a harrowing journey as he is chased through the night by this fearsome spectre. This depiction begins with a slow, walking tempo as the ride begins, gradually picking up speed as the horsemans presence is known. The horse first trots, then canters and eventually gallops in a mad dash to get away as ghostly laughter pierces the air, getting ever closer to the terrified schoolmaster.

Whiplash is a piece written for young band that explores rhythmic and motivic development in a thrilling and exciting manner. The title has a double meaning, referring first to the breakneck tempo, and second to the sharp report of the whipcrack through the piece. The combination of rhythm, energy, and changing meters working together make this a thoroughly exhilarating experience for students, conductors and audience!

E for Eternity was composed in memory of Nathan Luke Ray, a tubaist who had always dreamed of playing in the Fresno State Bulldog Marching Band. Nathan died in a car accidenton on his way home from realizing that dream - performing at his first game as a Fresno State student, a game nationally televised on ESPN. This piece was written by his teacher; the title came from his classmates, in memory of this vibrant young musician.

The Exultant Heart is the winner of the NBA/Merrill Jones Composition Contest and is nothing short of remarkable. The hauntingly beautiful opening is followed by a joyful middle section that features a lively dance, alluding to a rustic wedding dance complete with drum and tambourine. The first theme then returns in a choral-like setting as the dance rhythm continues, gradually settling down to a return of the opening mood while chimes improvise like church bells fading in the distance. Absolutely spellbinding!

Its inspired by Native American musical influences as well as the imagery of a powerful and dramatic storm that appears suddenly, sweeping viciously across the Midwestern plains. At first brooding on the horizon and later exploding with intensity, Dark Cloud represents the challenges and strife of a people battling the fierce and unpredictable elements in a time before technology.

Warm, emotional, and harmonically rich, the lovely tune Ballerma comes from the shaped note book of hymns entitled The Southern Harmony and is similar to the well-known hymn Amazing Grace. Its the perfect subject for the collection of colorful and creative fantasies that make up this work. After an initial presentation, the melody is used in a series of contrasting treatments, the first being flippant and humorous. The next is simple and childlike, featuring a delicate percussion ensemble, clarinet ensemble or combination of both. The final fantasy incessantly drives the music forward, releasing pent-up energy along the way to the thrilling conclusion.

A fast, furious yet very playable work meant to conclude concerts in a fun and lighthearted manner. While it sounds impressive and quite demanding, appropriate ranges and wise orchestration make it quite playable at faster tempos. As with most of Gilroys compositions, the percussion section plays an important role as indicated by a galloping rhythm first introduced by a solo woodblock. This fun and energetic work will provide a musical exclamation point to any wind band performance.

Written in a moto perpetuo style, the intensity begins in the first measure and doesnt let up until the final measure is finished. Driving, frenetic ostinati alternate with heroic fanfares throughout, pulsating with seemingly unlimited and unyielding drive.

This well-known holiday favorite receives a new twist in this arrangement for first-year players. The clever setting is written to be performed as a full-band piece or as a percussion ensemble feature for seven players. Another performance option is to have the band play the opening two bars followed by just the percussion performing the first time through. On the repeat the band can join in for a full-ensemble finish, making a nice change in presentation - perfect for any holiday or winter band concert.
