Here is a splendid composition by Feike van Tuinen commissioned by the municipality 'Het Bildt' on the occasion of its 500th anniversary in 2005. The score describes the history of the place situated in a nice area near to the Waddenzee, a sea bordering the Northern part of The Netherlands. It starts with the very first reclamation in 1505, and then comes the hard labour of the workers in the mud, the joy of winning new land on the sea, the continuous struggle or game between the wind and the water, and finally the festivities in 2005. This composition challenges both the conductor and the musicians to bring this score to life.

This is a very good combination of jazzy melodies and rhythms. Starting with some quartet solo work, the first movement introduces the theme that gradually gets more powerful. Presented by the woodwinds, a beautiful melody in slow rock dominates the whole second movement. The third movement is an explosion of rhythm and emotion powered by the brass section.

£86.70The Silken Ladder - Gioachino Rossini
The opera or 'farsa comica' in one act 'La Scala di Seta' (The Silken Ladder) by Gioacchino Rossini (1792-1868) was first performed at the 'San Mois' theatre in Venice on 9 May 1812. It is the story of the beautiful Giulia whose guardian wants her to marry a rich young man. However, Giulia is already married to a young man who climbs every night into her room by means of a silken ladder. In the splendid overture of this opera Rossini gave an important part to the wind ensemble. This classic of the early 19th century repertoire has been most skilfully and enthusiastically arranged for wind band by Lorenzo della Fonte.

Drive me Wild (Maak me gek) was a hit single in 2007 from Dutch popular artist Gerard Joling, and his first solo single in a very long time. This work has a big carnival party feel, which will have everyone on the floor dancing. It is very playable, and is also suited to bands at the lower level.

£61.00Transeamus usque ad Bethlehem - Franz Schneider
The original piece was written by Franz Schneider (1737- 1812), organist and musical director at the Benedictine abbey of Melk on the Danube, for choir, string quartet, two trumpets and timpani. This arrangement can be performed with choir and band, without choir or by a mixed ensemble or band. Instead of using the complete choir, one can also only use the first choir part solo with accompaniment of the quartet parts. Therefore, the four part mixed choir score has alternatively been arranged for multipart wind ensemble (from a quartet).The original string parts have been arranged for symphonic band. Thanks to the cue notes, the passages intended for large band can also be performed by smaller ensembles in a most satisfactory way. The various instrumentation possibilities are clearly indicated in the instrumentation lists of the wind quartet and orchestra. The complete percussion part is totally 'ad libitum'.

For Bedrich Smetana, the polka was the source of typical Czech music par excellence. We do not only find it in his operas, symphonic works and chamber music, but he also wrote single or separate polkas. Smetana's first polkas were written when he was still a student and they were composed for dancing. This is also the case for this polka 'Aus dem Studentenleben' (Pictures of a student's life). It was originally written for piano. It is cheerful music with a lot of variety and, above all, a typical Czech character.

£110.40Pomp and Circumstance no. 2 - Edward Elgar
Sir Edward Elgar wrote his Pomp and Circumstance March no. 2 in 1901 and dedicated it to the composer Granville Bantock. Although this second march is less known than the first, it is not less beautiful. A loud call for attention by the brass section is followed by a nice staccato theme with the woodwinds, completed by different instruments in a construction leading to the trio. This trio in major key contains a simple melody written in thirds played respectively by the woodwinds and the brass. The work ends with a short but powerful coda.
