Of Wizards and Warriors - Roland Barrett
Transport your audience back to medieval times in this spirited and bold new work for young band. The noble opening instantly conjures images of a world where magic and chivalry abound. As tempo picks up, the entire ensembledrives forward as layer upon layer is added. A beautiful lyrical section builds to a powerful impact before the piece moves to a final section beginning with a trumpet ostinato that alternates between 4/4 and 2/4. This selection was commissioned by the Central Oklahoma Band Directors Association for the CODA Ninth Grade Honor Band. After an energetic opening, a lyrical legato section is introduced by a woodwind choir and answered by a brass choir before returning to the original excitement of the opening section. A beautiful slower section in 3/4 time follows before the opening section returns, taking the piece to a strong, bold ending.

This suite for wind band consists of three Old Irish melodies: "March" is a traditional Irish march of slower 6/8 beat. Led by a characteristically accented drum, the drone effect of a Uilleann bagpipe rings through for an air of courage. Next is a beautiful and nostalgic theme titled "Yellow Village Gate" in Gaelic, the first language of Ireland. Here, a solo piccolo presents the image of a simple fife. "Reel" is a typical Irish dance of very quick tempo. Maintaining the pace from beginning to end, intensified motion combining duple and 6/8 meter drives through to the coda's bold conclusion.
