Jericho is the musical translation of the well-known story from the book of Joshua about the capture of the city of Jericho by the Israelites.Part 1 depicts the cruel journey through the desert to Canaan, the promised land. An emotional lamentation for the yearning for a home, for the end of a roaming existence.The capture of Jericho is the theme of part 2. The city cannot be captured immediately and Jehovah orders an impressive army to march around the city for six days. On the seventh day, they marched around the city seven times and the priests blew their trumpets and the people cried so loud that the walls of Jericho came tumbling down. The Jews stormed the city and drove theinhabitants away. The music clearly reveals the marching army and you can hear the walls falling down with a tremendous noise. However, there is quite some artistic freedom in the actual story.A majestic and grand melody subsequently evokes the triumphant emotions that emerged as the fortified city fell (part 3).Following a personal and romantic interpretation, the scene ultimately ends in a typical Jewish feast (part 4) whereby the virtuosity of melodies played by the woodwinds and the passionate rhythms refer to traditional Jewish music. All themes are repeated in this last part in various forms, often simultaneous and in duelling counterpoint. The piece ends with fragments from the main theme of part 1 in major: peace and quiet return at last.

The opening Lament features a plaintive horn melody and expansive harmonies. The mood then shifts to an intensely rhythmic dance using an unusual modal scale. In the final section, the flutes switch to recorders and a driving percussion ostinato figure helps propel this magnificent piece to a dramatic ending. A rewarding and satisfying work from one of today's best composers for young bands.

Franco Cesarini had the opportunity to attend performances by an ethnic group of Cossacks from Kuban. Divertimento is an outstanding composition by Roger Boutry for Alto Saxophone and Wind Orchestra. This great work is really nice to play and will enlighten the audience. The Orchestracomposition required is: 2 Flutes, 2 Oboes, 2 Bassoons, 2 small Clarinets, Clarinet I, Clarinet II, 1 Bass Clarinet, 2 Alto Saxophones, 2 Tenor Saxophones, 1 Baritone Saxophone, 4 Horns, 4 Bb or C Trumpets, 4 Trombone or 3Trombone and an Euphonium, 1 Bb or C Bass, 1 Double Bass, 1 Harp, Timpani, Drum and a Celesta. It is divided into three parts: I. "Allegro ma non troppo", is strongly rhythmic and syncopated.Itincludes a Cadenza by the Solo Saxophone and is written as a tribute to Jazz music. II. "Andante", also includes a Cadenza by the Solo Saxophone but at the end of the section. It is reminiscent of slowerblues ballads. III. This part features few sections by the Solo Saxophone but is specially highlighted its ending, in a bright and fast finale. This volume features the score and parts for all theinstruments. Born in France in 1932, Roger Boutry received numerous prizes, including those for Piano, Composition and Conducting. He received the Grand Prix de Rome in 1954. His career was quite successful,alternating between Harmony professor, composer and conductor. He also received numerous prizes for his incredible compositions.

Developed by the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA), the Hayabusa asteroid probe returned to earth on June 13, 2010, completing its mission as the first ever spacecraft to obtain surface samples from an asteroid. Thisfanfare was commissioned by the band of NEC Tamagawa, conducted by Ikuo Inagaki, to commemorate the success of the Hayabusa mission. Poet and Peasant Overture - Franz von Suppé
Preludes and overtures were often written to set the mood of Viennese folk plays and therefore might be used for more than one production. Such was the case for Poet and Peasant, which introduced a comedy of the that name in 1846. The piece had already been heard as the overture to the play Lots of money, short of sleep and may also have prefaced two other plays. This overture did not belong to an opera until several years after its 1845 composition date. The themes from this overture are among the most often quoted material for comic effects for stage productions and animated cartoons. Probably, they represent, in sound, an era of nostalgia from the old-time park band concerts andare familiar to audiences of all age groups. This composition deserves to be heard in its original context as a serious, but highly entertaining, selection.

Pacific Dreams describes the experience of Miguel, a traveling composer from Spain who, feeling somewhat alienated from his homeland, is wandering through an area of Sydney known as The Rocks. At a small outdoor market in a typical street of this oldcolonial neighbourhood, he discovers a print of William DeShazos painting "Pacific Dreams" Portrayed in the painting is the surf of one of the exotic islands in the Pacific. Next, with the impressive Sydney Harbour Bridge looming over the narrowstreets of The Rocks, he envisions sultry Pacific beaches. Suddenly a theme he once composed about the lakes in Japan comes to him. Is it the Asian influences present in cosmopolitan Sydney that bring this theme to mind? Or perhaps the waters aroundSydney, over which he could sail to Tahiti? He is uncertain. Could this same theme be used to create a new composition about his feelings for the metropolis Sydney? How then to work his Pacific Dreams into the mix? Miguel is certainly no fan ofHawaiian music. Mayby he could use the vocabularies of islands like Hawaii and Tahiti, their beautiful vowel combinations being sung ad libitum by a mixed choir.With these ideas and his newly purchased print of "Pacific Dreams", he boards the Metroat Circular Quay. He has a final glimpse of the harbour and the Sydney Opera House as the train races into the ground. On to the hotel! To work! He must compose!Maestoso : Miguel is impressed as he gazes upon the Sydney Harbour Bridge. And yet, hewants to go away from this city. Away, to an exotic island in the Pacific.Steady Rock : In the Rocks, musicians are playing at a square. Miguel basks in the atmosphere but at the same time he is fantasizing about Hawaii and Tahiti.Andante Lamentoso :In his hotel room, Miguel is feeling sad and lonely in this big city. He takes comfort in his "Pacific Dreams".Allegro : Miguel boards the boat that takes him from Darling Harbour to Circular Quay. In his mind he is traveling on to Hawaii. Or is ithome, where the bolero is playing? He is pulled back to reality by the skyline of Sydney.

Version for Concert BandManhattan was commissioned by the United States Army Band for their solo cornet player Woodrow English and first performed by them in Carnegie Hall, New York, in November 2003. The two-movement work demonstrates both the lyrical and technical abilities of this outstanding player. The 'theme' is a weekend in New York and the opening bluesy movement, Saturday Serenade, describes the city on a Saturday night. While writing the second movement, Sunday Scherzo, the composer pictured an early morning jog in Central Park. This vivaciously rhythmic second movement ends with an even quicker coda bringing the work to a brilliant close. Eachmovement can also be played individually when a shorter solo is required.
