    I Byen Samarkand - Nordstoga

Odd Nordstoga is an award winning Norwegian artist who has been active since the 1990's, working in the popular-/folk music genre. I have listened to a lot of Odd Nordstogas music, in particular the Heim te mor-album. When preparing for Asky Brass Band's participation at Siddis Brass in 2008, I came across I byen Samarkand, another of Nordstogas tunes. This was from the Pilegrim album. I thought it had an exciting mix of expressions and included it in the band's repertoire for the Siddis Brass competiton. Pilegrim was initially a commision by the Bergen International Festival back in 2005, based on lyrics by author Ragnar Hovland and Odd Nordstoga's music. -Svein H. Giske -

    Eventyr-Suite - Øystein Sjøvaag Heimdal

Fairytale-Suite is an original work for beginning band. The name of the movements are taken from well-known themes from Norwegian fairytales. The music may not tell a story itselv, but it may be a good base for an exciting fairytale on a concert? This piece gives challenging parts to every player and it's a good choice to showcase the entire band. To the conductor: It's several doublings of the voices. This makes it possible to omit certain instruments or parts. The Drum Set part may be split and played by several players.

    No War - Marco Somadossi

The theme of this composition is immediately evident from the title, which almost requires no further explanation. It will never be possible to represent or reproduce the full implications of a tragedy such as war, all too often forgotten, concealed, exploited or written off as being an evil that is "necessary" for the development of civilisation. War changes the course of human history: man kills man, fathers bury their sons, children take up arms, and mankind is devastated by evil, choosing death over life. The atrocities, repeatedly perpetrated and evident to all observers, are an offence to human dignity. Yet they are tolerated and, at times, even re-interpreted as inevitable remedies for "obstacles" to the global economy, in order- it would seem- to build "a better world". And all this goes on despite the fact that the terrible scars left by past wars are still evident and should serve as a warning to ensure that such tragedies do not return to devastate our world. "No War" is thus a heart-felt protest against any form of culture that justifies war as a means of gaining wealth and power, satisfying the economic needs of the richest countries at the expense of the poorest nations. In so doing the one truly fundamental value is annihilated, that of human life.

    Lincoln Portrait - Aaron Copland

Lincoln Portrait was commissioned by Andre Kostelanetz for the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra in 1942. A stirring tribute to an eminent American, it includes fragments of songs from the Civil War era, sweeping original themes, anda narration drawn from Lincoln's own words. This transcription by Walter Beeler has become a staple in the repertoire for wind bands, and provides an impressive way to help celebrate the 200th anniversary of Lincoln's birth. Audioused with permission from the Mark Records CD: Northshore Concert Band Live at the 2001 Midwest Clinic - John Lynch, conductor - Dr. William Warfield, narrator (Score Only - 48006216/$15.50)

Amadeus in the Percussion Box - Joseph Compello

Amadeus in the Percussion Box is a Grade 1 composition featuring the percussion section of a band in its first year of instruction. The theme is a simplification of Papageno's famous "Bird Catcher's" aria from Mozart's opera The Magic Flute, and provides an opportunity for beginning players to learn about crescendos as well as first and second endings. An exciting introduction to one of classical music's most memorable melodies!

    Flaming Arrow - Larry Clark

With a pronounced Native American flavor, this characteristically well-wrought Larry Clark piece alternates slow reflective music with an aggressive Allegro that includes rhythmic shouting and stamping. The return of the slow opening music at measure 35 leads to an accelerando and crescendo into the climactic return of the Allegro material and the exciting conclusion that may have the audience stamping and shouting!

    Promenade - Bill Calhoun

A regal new piece from up and coming composer Bill Calhoun. Promenade can be defined as a "ceremonious opening to a formal event" and in this case, Promenade should provide an excellent opening to your band's first concert. Your beginning groups will sound marvelous with the strong scoring of this majestic offering, also an ideal piece for contest/festival performance.

    Antagonist - Larry Clark

In every great story there is always an antagonist, the character of opposing force who is central to the success of the story. Larry Clark has applied this concept to music in a new beginning band piece, fascinating in sound and an excellent cross-curricular tie with English classes, musically illustrating the structure of a good story. This piece is aggressive and at times, purposely antagonizing. Designed with the youngest of players in mind, it works on simple repeated eighth note patterns as the foundation for the melodic material. As is typical in a Larry Clark piece, interesting parts are provided for all instruments, and everyone gets to play the melody.

The Air and Light of Aether - Richard Summers

A regal piece for beginning bands, this composition offers opportunities for establishing an understanding of proper ensemble balance and instrumental color with nice changes in orchestration that make the piece interesting and fresh. The Air and Light of Aether is a great chance for students to learn an awareness of the group as a whole and push their expressiveness to new heights through the relatively low technical demands of the piece.
