Doppler Effect - Sean O'Loughlin
The term Doppler Effect describes the aural phenomenon of something changing pitch relative to what direction it is traveling in relation to the listener. An example is when a siren coming towards you is higher in pitch then when it is going away from you. Sean O'Loughlin uses this fascinating concept to construct an original composition that uses instances of this effect. OLD SETTLERS' PICNIC is a is a four-movement suite for Band by Eric Ewazen, arranged by Virginia Allen; each movement is published separately. Composed with high school performers in mind, the suite was inspired by an 1890s photograph and descriptions of a Wisconsin town's "Old Settlers" celebration. AFTERNOON GAMES are depicted with a Vivace scherzo in 6/8. The running and skipping leads to an extended fugue for a copycat game before returning to the opening theme.

Composed to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Karel Husa's iconic Music for Prague 1968, LABYRINTH is an expansive, expressive four-movement work of symphonic weight and scope. Polyphonic webs of searching melody coalesce into enveloping tapestries of sound as the piece unfolds. Pann describes the epic final movement as "a gargantuan crescendo like the last movement of Respighi's The Pines of Rome or Ravel's Bolero [that] should leave the audience and players sonically drenched by the end." LABYRINTH is an enthralling experience for ensembles and listeners alike, and one that will linger with them long after the last chord fades from the concert hall.

£168.50The Bones of Mr. Fortune - Adolphus Hailstork
THE BONES OF MR. FORTUNE (FREE AT LAST!) is an 11-minute concerto-like work for solo flute accompanied by symphonic winds and percussion - perfect to play with band or with orchestra, as well as with the composer's own piano reduction (114-42424). The work features lengthy cadenzas, and exhilarating dance-like sections with the ensemble. Hailstork describes the historical inspiration: abused in life and death, an enslaved man (Mr. Fortune) was owned by a surgeon who preserved his skeleton to study anatomy. The bones remained with the doctor's family for generations, and were given a proper burial that made national news in 2013, 215 years after Mr. Fortune's death.
