Athabasca - Peter Meechan
The stunning Athabasca Glacier, in the Columbia Icefield in the Canadian Rockies, provided the inspiration for this work. After having visited the Glacier in 2016, I knew that it would find a place in my music - the sheer magnitude of it was stunning, the visual was breath-taking, and the rate at which it is receding (5 meters per year) completely devastating.Now sadly collapsed, beneath the Glacier there were great, expansive ice caves - thankfully they were photographed by explorers, and it is these photos that provided the inspiration for the work; an imaginary walk through these fragile, beautiful structures; what music would sound like in them, what talking would sound like in them; and what moments of listening would sound like in them.When writing the piece I also wanted to try and acknowledge the diminishing nature of the Glacier. Whilst not being something you can visibly notice by simply observing for a short time, it is still happening in front of very eyes. This is represented by the tempos in the piece - almost doubling from the original tempo to the fastest tempo of the work (around 2/3rds of the way through), and - hopefully - almost imperceptibly.When commissioned by Ray Baril and the Edmonton Winds to write a new work for them, the Alberta connection between the group and the Glacier was impossible to resist.Peter Meechan 2018

Forgotten Children - Peter Meechan
Forgotten Children is a short work for wind orchestra and electronic accompaniment. Adapted from it's original form (for brass quartet and CD, Forgotten Children was written for The Desert Winds and their conductor Chuck Maguire, to whom the piece is dedicated.Whilst conceiving the piece, the subject of the war in Syria dominated news headlines, specifically the refusal by Western nations to intervene. There were, of course, political reasons at the heart of the decision, complicated by a situation that no one understood in a country no one understands. The harrowing images of chemical weapons being used on children was seemingly not enough to persuade the West that their help was needed, but those silent voices fell on even deafer ears. Program NotesThe life story of John Newton is well-documented and his occupation as a slave-trader and subsequent conversion and ordination as curate of Olney, Buckinghamshire, well-known. This incredible story probably makes the words to Amazing Grace! so remarkable, although, Newton can only be credited for the first three verses. This arrangement, although not technically difficult, will require a sustained sound towards the end during its climactic conclusion. It is therefore advisable that the physical demands be understood before commencement so that the correct measurement of exertion can be made throughout the presentation.

Capriccio - Gustav Holst
Holst composed this short, light-hearted but tuneful work in 1932, while on a visit to the USA, for Nathaniel Shilkret's concert jazz band. He was asked to use a folk tune but invented one of his own. The piece was not performed and remained in manuscript. This version for wind band was arranged by John Boyd with the approval of Imogen Holst.

Program NotesToccata - Oh the blessed Lord was first conceived as a brass sextet and remained in that form until the early 1970s when it was amplified to full brass band instrumentation. Now its further amplification to Wind Band it is hoped that it will be enjoyed by an even greater audience and many more performers.Whilst it is not easy to play, the music, once mastered, is something that bands enjoy. It will be evident to the discerning that this close-knit work is based on the verse of an adaption of the old spiritual, "Oh, dem golden slippers," the text beginning, "Oh the blessed Lord, He has saved my soul." The figures are derived therefrom.The absence of percussion is the express intention of the composer.
