In the Bleak Midwinter - Gustav Holst / arr. Jack Bullock

The beautifully haunting sounds of this Holst classic appear first in the lower brass to launch this highly atmospheric scoring for concert band. Shifting tonalities and sonorities include a chorale section stating the melodic material with safe and traditional treatment. Technical demands are minimal, and even though the work is positioned for a young ensemble, it should not be overlooked by advancing groups in search of a quality arrangement. Quest of the Magi - Brian Beck

was one of the working titles for John Henry Hopkins Jr.'s famous carol, "We Three Kings." Written in 1857 for a Christmas pageant in New York City, "We Three Kings" tells the tale of the Magis' journey to find a newly born king in a faraway land and the precious gifts they brought with them. This piece focuses more on the journey of "following yonder star." Traveling across many countries in the first century was a perilous task, full of danger, thievery, and possible death, not to mention these men were traveling with some of the most precious and expensive cargo one could possess. This piece chronicles the magi acquiring myrrh, frankincense, and gold for their journey. Each treasure is represented by its own motif and woven into Hopkins' original carol. (2:45)

    Christmas Fanfares - Todd Stalter

"Christmas Fanfares" was born from the composer's desire to write a lively yet not overly difficult concert opener for his band's holiday program. Initially composed as three separate fanfares---each on a different carol---the fanfares were combined with transitional material to form this larger work. The active percussion and strong brass scoring give a unique energy to these traditional carols. Band members and audience alike will enjoy this wonderful piece. Haunted Sleigh Ride - James Lord Pierpont / arr. Brian Beck

is based on "Jingle Bells" but shifted to a minor key, transforming a winter favorite into an eerie adventure into the snowy unknown. We may not be "laughing all the way." Brian Beck's setting is jam-packed with various style and dynamic markings as well as accidentals in every part, challenging musicians, and engaging audiences. Shifting a piece from major to minor (or vice versa) will instantly illuminate a melody and breathe new life into a piece. What was happy is now sad, what was dark is now vibrant, and, in this case, what was cheerful is now spooky. Correlated to , Level 4. (2:20)

Fantasy on "Yankee Doodle" - Mark Williams

This is a refreshing and exciting work! seems like such a simple melody, but it's amazing how well Mark Williams develops it using a set of variations. Although opened by a humorous statement of the theme by solo tuba, you'll soon find that this is not a novelty piece . . . the varied styles and moods are displayed in well-written music that is perfectly held together by the original theme. Excellent! This title is available in MakeMusic Cloud.

    Soothsayer - Eric Rath

, by Eric Rath, is a study in contrast and mood. Music with a mystical and otherworldly tone portrays a soothsayer--an oracle, fortune teller, or diviner. Mostly in 3/4 time and primarily built on the octatonic scale (half and whole steps alternating), the percussionists also get to have a heyday with this one. Students not only get to show off their technical side but work to develop smooth, flowing lines and a maturity to balance the most important part at any given moment. Enjoy the ride! (2:55)
