The town of Zevenhuizen (Seven Houses) in the Dutch province of Groningen conceived the idea to assemble 777 musicians for an experimental open air concert. Within that context, Jacob de Haan was commissioned to write a special composition for the local music society Concordia on the occasion of its fiftieth anniversary. The full number of musicians could not be realized entirely, but the performance was a great happening nonetheless. Now, the music has been published in a compilation, with the most appealing melodies in a varying style of rock music and ballads. The compelling closing theme of Music Xperience will linger in the minds of many listeners and players long after the concert has ended.

This work was commissioned by the concert band Da Capo Leeuwarden from the Netherlands, which was linked with the Dutch postal service PTT up until 1995. Mercury happens to be the messenger of the gods - a kind of mailman, one could say. Yet the composer did not choose the god but the planet Mercury as his source of inspiration for this work in four uninterrupted movements. He created a multifaceted work in which the mysterious celestial body is represented, as well as a number of space missions exploring it. The history of paper ranges over more than five thousand years: likely starting around 3500 BC in old Egypt with the use of papyrus. The oldest findings of written paper date from 2700 BC. In China, the first production of paper took place in the year 105 AD. The Arabs acquired their knowledge of the art of making paper around 750 AD, thanks to Chinese prisoners of war. Around the same time, the Celtic Ogham script was created in Ireland and carved into stones or trees. In Europe, the first paper mill was not put into operation until the 12th century! No matter how different the production methods and its historical use, paper was always a way to pass on wisdom, art and knowledge. Even today, in the age of digitalisation, paper still has a somewhat 'sacred' image. With Papyrus, Thomas Doss has written a wonderful composition in which the history of paper is reflected, and listeners can very much hear the various periods of this history represented throughout the piece.

It is the name of the well-known shoe factory that was established there in 1899 and that symbolizes the industrial and social development of the city. In the symphony, we find various references to the mythological meaning of salamanders: they are vigorous creatures that contain the soul of fire. Without salamanders there would not be any fire. In addition, a salamander can change its shape and serve as a kind of vehicle through time. In the Berber culture, the salamander represents change.
