Slavonic Rock March Wind Band Set (Score & Parts)
According to his teachers, Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky (1840-1893), was not particularly gifted. His special talents were acknowledged only in 1865 when he had been working for the Ministry of Finances for some years. In 1866 he was appointed teacher at the Conservatory and applied himself to composing. His oeuvre is fairly extensive and many of his compositions receive a high ranking on the international list of classical music, including his six symphonies, solo concertos (violin concerto and piano concertos), ballets (The Nut Cracker, Swan Lake), and his overtures (1812 and Romeo and Juliette). In 1893 Tchaikovsky died of Cholera after drinking a glass of infected water. His Slavonic March is a popular concert piece for symphonic orchestra that is still frequently performed in concert halls. David Well arranged the theme and created a contemporary march in rock style. Tchaikovsky once said to an unsatisfied teacher: 'I will be a great composer within 10 years time.' 02:30

Spirit of the Winds
Spirit of the Winds, a concert/festival work for the developing band, was inspired by the beautiful Temecula Valley of California. Each year, the sky over the valley is filled with hot air balloons creating a visual sight that is not soon forgotten. Of course, balloons are unable to "steer" and must fly with the gentle breezes of the air current. As a result, those subject to the "spirit of the winds" can find themselves over festival grounds or floating above the beautiful Temecula Valley vineyards. Beginning with a bold, yet mysterious statement, the introduction gives way to a soaring melody as our flight begins. Cascading figures in the woodwinds create the effect of wind currents followed by a beautiful secondary melodic statement. The original theme returns leading to a very energetic conclusion. Accessible to a wide range of concert bands, Spirit of the Winds provides multiple teaching opportunities and will be enjoyed by both performer and audience.

Tanczi Wind Band Set (Score & Parts)
This suite was written in the style of traditional Russian folk music, but does not use existing melodies or themes as its basis. The colourful and varied work contains a number of surprising turns, but also familiar sounds. After the introduction, a kind of Trepak follows ? a fairly quick dance with attractive themes. The second movement (Garovot) is predominantly slow and conveys some melancholy, although, during a more dynamic passage the passion flares up again. Finally, the Troika takes us along in a reindeer sleigh through a grand snowy landscape. This is a wonderful tribute to the music of Eastern Europe in the style of some of the great Russian masters. 0:13:30

The operetta The Gipsy Baron is, together with Die Fledermaus (The Bat), the most famous theatre work by Johann Strauss Jr. A libretto full of romance, original musical ideas, compelling Viennese dances, fiery rhythmic Hungarian music and beautiful arias, were just some of the ingredients that lead to its huge success. The Gipsy Baron can also be thought of as a comic opera. The main motif of this overture won first prize in a contest that was to provide a new Hungarian anthem, however because Strauss did not have Hungarian nationality, another melody was chosen. The Saint and the City Wind Band Set (Score & Parts)
This tumultuous composition tells the legend of the town of Zwolle in the Netherlands. In the waters surrounding Zwolle lived a dragon. When it appeared it threatened to destroy the town with it fiery breath if a human sacrifice was not offered. St Michael confronted the dragon in a battle without equal. As a knight armed with a double edged sword the archangel battled against the dragon and decapitated it. Thus the city was saved. To represent the archangel the composer has chosen the hymn tune Laudate Dominum . The dragon is symbolised by a series of menacing chords. 0:08:00

From the tranquillity of the opening, where first can be heard the eerie 'warcrye', things move quickly on; figures are scurrying up and down the hills moving into battle positions. The intensity increases constantly and soon a fierce battle rages. In time, the fighting subsides and a period of reflective calm replaces the chaos that has gone before. During the lull in battle a lone voice is heard, as if trying to appeal for peace, for people to resolve their differences and see sense. The voice is, however, ignored and the conflict sparks off once more. The ruthless Elfegen warriors are not content until the victory is complete, a very loud, and triumphant climax is heard as another battle reaches its inevitable conclusion. New York - Nigel Hess
New York - or to be more precise, Manhattan. For anyone who is familiar with this bizarre and wonderful city, here is a 'picture' that needs no explanation. For those not yet hooked this is a foretaste of things to come! This piece forms the final movement of 'East Coast Pictures', commissioned by the British Youth Wind Orchestra with funds from the National Westminster Bank plc. It is a suite of three short 'pictures' that were inspired by several visits to a small part of the American East Coast, an area that provides great extremes in the geography and the people.
