Transfiguration - James Curnow
James Curnow explores many domains of sound with this wonderful piece. Four extensive variations, based on the melody of the hymn All Praise to You, Oh Lord, together form a beautiful piece of music for use in church services. The composer has a fresh view of the theme in the various fragments of the melody, from ethereal reflections to passionate joy. The last variation starts softly but energetically, and keeps developing using the last phrase of the melody - until the majestic highlight of this glorious hymn begins.

In the year 1368 a rapacious character takes up residence in the castle of Rijnesteyn at Cothen. He is Johan,bastard son of the Bishop of Utrecht.Round this now so peaceful castle eventful matters are enacted. In part one Johan and Willem Gulik of Guelders set out to do battle against King Charles of France. On their return,in part two, Johan captures two French goldsmiths in Hainault and incarcerates them at Castle Rijnesteyn. Part three is a musical representation of a courtly ballet in medieval style. The final part relates how Jan van Rijnesteyn goes to war against Hendrik van Vianen and Lord of 'Goy,Viscount of Utrecht.Jan loots hispossessions and threathens to conquer all. In het jaar 1368 betrekt een roofzuchtig heerschap het kasteel Reijnestein te Cothen.Het is Johan, de bastaardzoon van de Utrechtse bisschop. Rond dit nu zo vredig gelegen ridderslot hebben zich toen geruchtmakende taferelen afgespeeld. In het eerste deel trekt Johan met Willem Gullik, de hertog van Gelre, ten strijde tegen koning Karel van Frankrijk. De terugreis speelt zich af in het tweede deel. Tijdens deze reis neemt Johan in Henegouwen twee Franse goudsmeden gevangen en sluit ze op in de kerker van slot Rijnesteyn. Deel 3 is de muzikale weergave van een hoofs ballet in middeleeuwse stijl. In het laatste deel wordt verteld hoe Jan van Rijnesteyn in 1396 ten strijde trekt tegen Hendrik van Vianen en de heer van't Goy, burggraaf van Utrecht. Jan plundert diens goederen en dreigt diens bezittingen te veroveren.

'Sweet Betsy from Pike' - This is the story of the girl who crossed the big prairie with her brother Mike. The setting has a reminiscene of the French 'Musette Waltz' because it was said that Betsy originally came from Paris.3. 'The Fiddler in the Rain' - This is the song from the play 'The Arkansas Traveller' which was very popular in Ohio in the 1850's.4. 'Johnny and Frankie' - This is the combination of 2 songs 'When Johnny comes home' and 'Frankie and Johnny'. The lyrics of the songs have nothing in common, but the two melodies seem to be made to blend perfectly.

Program NotesToccata - Oh the blessed Lord was first conceived as a brass sextet and remained in that form until the early 1970s when it was amplified to full brass band instrumentation. Now its further amplification to Wind Band it is hoped that it will be enjoyed by an even greater audience and many more performers.Whilst it is not easy to play, the music, once mastered, is something that bands enjoy. It will be evident to the discerning that this close-knit work is based on the verse of an adaption of the old spiritual, "Oh, dem golden slippers," the text beginning, "Oh the blessed Lord, He has saved my soul." The figures are derived therefrom.The absence of percussion is the express intention of the composer.

Written for the Chicago Staff Band's tour of England in 2015, this exhilarating work was premiered at The Salvation Army's Boundless International Congress at London's O2 Arena to an audience of 20,000 people. It has since been arranged here for wind band.The piece is structured as a through-composed triptych, weaving together the popularcontemporary worship songs Shine on Us (Michael W. Smith) and Speak, O Lord (Keith and Kristin Getty) with the historic Salvationist anthem The World for God (Evangeline Booth) to explore themes of light, guidance, and mission.The work opens with energy and rhythmic drive, centering on Shine on Us. A stark contrast follows in the meditative middle section. Here, the music explores the contemplative depths of Speak, O Lord, featuring solo horn. The final section introduces a nostalgic and stirring reference to General Evangeline Booth's classic hymn, The World for God.The finale juxtaposes all three themes.
