Visions is one of John Rutter's most recent compositions (2016). It was written for violin solo, treble voice choir, strings and harp. A song and dance for flute with wind band accompaniment. Blue is a gentle, tuneful solo. The accompaniment is very much in a chamber-music style and there are very few places where the whole ensemble plays at the same time. There is nothing overt or dramatic in the music and subtlety and rubato are very much the required manner. It is not a desperately sad piece but is just tinged with a little melancholy. Orange on the other hand is a fiery, driving dance which gives the soloist a chance to display technical prowess. During the outer sections Latin percussion carries the music along but the inner sections are more dissonant and are built on inner rhythm. The two pieces are as contrasting as possible, just like the colours of the title.Duration: 3.15 & 4.15

Enjoying his travels in Scotland, Marco Putz decided to compose a piece for wind band, based on Scottish folk songs. While in the airport at Glasgow, shortly before boarding his plane, Putz bought a collection of folk melodies from all over Scotland that had been arranged for flute. At first he harmonised several melodies in his own style, then he began to alter the resulting pieces (especially rhythmically). Eventually Putz added passages here and there and orchestrated the piece for wind band. Putz's resulting composition is an educational work that is both enjoyable and appealing to players of all ages, although it was written with young bands in mind. From the Highlands is part of a project to increase the repertoire available to youth and school bands, both in quantity and quality; an important personal and musical goal for the composer. This is Putz's third contribution of this sort to be added to the De Haske catalogue, following his successful Arrows of Lightning and Four Sketches for Band.Duration: 7:45

£309.99Ninth Symphony (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Barnes, James
Premiered on 21 September, 2018 in Lawrence, Kansas by The University of Kansas Wind Ensemble (Dr. Paul Popiel, conducting), James Barnes' Ninth Symphony was composed between January and late June of that same year. This large work was commissioned by a consortium of twenty-one college bands, community bands, professional bands and individuals to help mark the 70th birthday of the composer (b. 1949). It is an expansive forty-minute work in four movements, of which the composer writes, "This is my last symphony...this work represents a compendium of all that I have learned during the fifty years of composing and scoring for this wonderful new medium: the modern wind band." The first movement, subtitled Elegy, is based around G minor. It is the longest movement of the symphony. Tragic and despondent in character, it is cast in sonata-allegro form. The second movement is entitled Scherzo. Barnes claims that "I have always wanted to write a waltz," and that is how this movement is cast, in a modified rondo form in D minor. In contrast to the mood of the first movement, the scherzo is a delightful posy of expansive melody, splashy color, humor and rhythm. The third movement, which is in a modified tertiary form, is entitled Night Music. In contrast to the scherzo, this movement begins with a mysterious incantation, first displayed by solo Alto Flute. The music becomes even darker and more mysterious, while overall the movement effectively expresses an "otherworldly" mood, ending with a solo soprano offstage which suddenly emerges, eerily singing a modified version of the opening incantation. Cast in sonata-allegro form, the fourth movement is most definitely a rousing Finale, beginning with a brilliant fanfare and undergoing several mood transformations before emerging into the final coda, ending the symphony with an energetic splash of color.
