    Sword Dance

The sword dance is a tradition in many cultures. The Scottish sword dances date back to the 15th century. This traditional melody captures all the excitement and energy of the sword dance through insistent rhythms, variation in dynamics and a big accelerando at the end. Articulations should be clear and crisp, and the accelerando at the end should be as fast as you dare!

Centennial Celebration - Jacob de Haan

These days, many concert bands celebrate their centenary - this provided a good reason to compose the Centennial Celebration. This work has a festive, harmonious and optimistic vibe. A joyful introduction is followed by a lyrical passage with an enticing melody, after which the same theme can be heard in a pop style variation. Next is a kind of trio with a melody that will linger in your mind. Lively sounds bring us back to the lyrical main theme once more, but this time exuberant, like a pop ballad. Finally, we hear the festive sounds of the introduction again, now as a lustrous conclusion.

    Shamadan Dance - Thomas Doss

This work has been written within the framework of the Obertne project by the Bezirksblasmusikverband Linz-Land (Austria). It was dedicated to Anton Forstner as a thank you for his years of support to wind music in the Linz-Land District. The Shamadan is an old oriental folk dance full of symbolism in which a female dancer - often on the occasion of a wedding - balances a candelabra on her head as a token of spiritual light. In this work, the euphonium takes up the role of the dancer. At the very beginning, the soloist already has the opportunity to shine in an unaccompanied recitative. Next, the soloist and band alternate, and in the course of the work the band also plays an important part with various technical highlights. More variation is created with a solo passage accompanied by percussion and hand claps, culminating beautifully in a grand tutti towards the end of the piece. Challenging music with much to enjoy!

Beyond the Stars - James Curnow

Based on the traditional American shaped-note melody The Promised Land (first published in the 1800s), Beyond the Stars captures the spirit of the early American church musicians who voiced their enthusiasm for life and thefreedom of worship through both vocal and instrumental music. The music features several mini-variations wrapped up in four large variations (Fast, Fast, Slow, Fast-recapitulation). The composer has created new thematic materialfor each variation by excerpting motifs from three separate phrases of the original shaped-note melody. A stunning and powerful work for winds. Dur: c. 6:20

    Vistas - Steve Hodges

Featuring two melodic motives that are developed texturally and rhythmically throughout the piece, Vistas begins in a light, reflective manner before gradually building into a majestic contrapuntal statement by the brass. A driving percussion introduction begins the Vigoroso section and provides the rhythmic foundation for the second Vista. This minor setting of the initial motives provides an exciting variation that features a variety of meter changes and syncopated passages. A restatement of the initial motives with the driving rhythmic accompaniment begins an extended conclusion that brings the piece to a dynamic finish.

    Deck the Halls

The original Welsh song Nos galan dating back to the sixteenth century, has become an international Christmas carol with the English lyric Deck the hall with boughs of holly. The song does not offer much in terms of variation, but I have tried to construct a short piece where one can see that the song still offers itself to a wide array of stylistical treatments. The opening is almost like a Christmas Overture, before it wanders in to a renaissance-like style. The middle section offers a much more lush and lyrical rubato treatment, with lots of color and thick harmonization. The end then turns the tempo even more up than at the start of the piece, and brings us through a big band ending with long soaring lines.- John Philip Hannevik -

    Enjoy - Marco Tamanini

"Enjoy", but also savour, relish: this is not descriptive music, but music to be appreciated. From three points of view: the rhythm of the first movement, the melody of the second and the swing of the third. This piece is characterised by a continuous variation of timbres and colours, in a quest for instrumental solutions that are constantly changing. Examples of this are the main theme in the first movement, which provides the rhythmic backing for the introduction of the third movement, or the sinuous melody of the Bolero, which unravels in a constant development of sounds and timbres.
