This piece was commissioned by Torskangerpoll Musikklag as a massed-band item for their "Storm Festival" in 2016. The "Storm Festival" is a festival for from bands all over Norway with concerts, parades and a lot of fun in the small Western Norway town of Mly.The music is built around two motifs used throughout the piece. This piece is a good concert-opener or a character piece.Beware of the changing articulations in this piece, the contrast between marcato and legato is a vital part of the character of the piece.

Interlude - Wilhem Stenhammar
Wilhelm Stenhammar (1871-1927) was a Swedish pianist, conductor and composer. His compositions include incidental music, operas, concerts, two symphonies and choral works. Initially influenced above all by Wagner and Bruckner, Stenhammar increasingly welcomed in his music a Nordic colour as well as melodic and rhythmic characters typical of Swedish folklore. Completed in 1921, the cantata Sngen (The Song) was Stenhammar's last major work, and its combination of harmonic richness and contrapuntal dexterity ensured it a warm reception.The Interlude connecting the two halves of the work is the only part frequently performed today. It begins by creating a serious and intimate atmosphere, then the music gradually unfolds in increasingly powerful sonorities. Towards the middle a noble brass chorale emerges, but neither this nor the following finely crafted climax manage to change the prevailing mood of subtle melancholy typical of late Romantic Scandinavian composers. This arrangement by Franco Cesarini will allow your audience to get to know this great composer unknown to most.

The ever-flowing waters of the rivers introduce the slow, melodic middle section, which suddenly turns into traditional march music. This piece by Thierry Deleruyelle is based on one of the most significant events in the history of coal mining; the catastrophe at Courrires, Northern France. It took place on 10th March 1906 and is considered the worst mining accident in Europe and the second most significant in the world. This work is both emotional and spectacular and tells in 7 contrasting sections the catastrophe that occurred. This version for wind band was commissioned on the occasion of the 10th anniversary of the listing of the Nord-Pas-de-Calais Mining Basin as a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Concordia was the Roman goddess of concord or unity. To convey the unity among their musicians, many music societies over the years, including the band that commissioned this composition, have chosen this name. The literal translation of Color Concordia is color harmony. Consequently, the composer has gratefully used the many ranges of coloring of the concert band for the instrumentation of this work. He based the thematic material on the four note names in Concordia: C, C, D and A, resulting in a brilliant piece of music that will suit any band.

Majesty is a powerful and spectacular overture. Right from the start, the brass open the work brilliantly before making way for a majestic hymn mostly played by the woodwind. The end of the piece repeats the opening fanfare as a monumental finale in the style of an American symphonic march. This work was commissioned by the Bourbourg Wind Orchestra (France), conducted by Claude Deconinck, on the occasion of its 230th anniversary. This piece was premiered by the commissioning orchestra on 19 November 2022, just two months after the death of Queen Elizabeth II. Naturally, this work is dedicated to her.

Risoluto is a music term of Italian derivation, first appearing in the mid 1700s. A great many musical terms such as this are in Italian, because many of the important composers from the Renaissance to the Baroque were from the geographic area known today as Italy and spoke some form of Italian. Consequently, performance markings in their published music, widely disseminated through the rest of Europe, were in the language that they best understood. Music marked in this manner is to be played firmly and decisively with firm resolve and little variance from the marked tempo. It can be seen that while there are several stylistic changes in this piece, the tempo varies not a bit, holding firm at Allegro vivo, quarter note at 120, from first measure to last.

The title Luna is the Latin word for moon, which is the subject of this lyrical work by composer Yukiko Nishimura, originally composed for string orchestra. In a lilting waltz style, the composer has described the inspiration as imagining the sky with the moon at daytime. Nishimura's gift for melody shines throughout, especially in the middle section which includes lush passages in the upper winds with a delicate accompaniment. This new arrangement by the composer makes this beautiful work accessible to symphonic bands.
