Another classic Sousa march edited by the noted Sousa and march authority Frank Byrne, this work is presented with all of the class and integrity for which the Frank Byrne Editions are known. They are based on meticulous research by one of the leading experts in this field. The Sousa Band enjoyed its longest single engagement from September 30, 1915, to June 4, 1916, in an extravaganza presented in the New York Hippodrome. Sousa wrote this march in commemoration of that engagement.

From the creative pen of this talented young composer, we have Barretts latest contribution to the exciting contemporary literature for band. While not technically difficult, this work is extremely effective, as it presents four contrasting musical sections beginning with The Summoning, which opens with a very commanding tutti entrance that evolves into a quieter, mysterious section, then develops with a sense of urgency into a very strong dynamic ending. This is followed by Fear, a dramatic section with extensive use of percussion, leading to The Eye of the Vortex, beginning quietly, as it starts to develop to a great dynamic climax followed immediately by a serene quietness that leads to the final section, Fury, ending with a dramatic and furious finale. An exceptional, adventuresome new work!

£104.50Fallen Fallen Is Babylon - Jared Spears
Babylon opens with a subtle percussion introduction followed by the statement of the motive by the flute, then resolving into the developmental section utilizing fragments of the motif. Again the percussion sets up a driving introduction to further the developmental section, this time in an allegro setting. Rich harmonies and active percussion lines prevail with this piece, making it one of this composers best works for concert band.

This dramatic work is built upon a strong rhythmic motif. There is very good use of imitation throughout and an excellent recurring fugal section. A challenging, yet solidly doubled and scored composition, this piece displays exciting use of percussion as we have all come to expect from this gifted composer.

Colorful and exciting best describe this program work. A hauntingly lyric flute line and distant brass chords create a tranquil setting for the opening section of this piece. A gradual increase in tempo and intensity leads into the allegro molto portion. Highlighted by syncopated, dance-like melodies and punctuated with rhythmic accompanying figures, this section displays an almost jazz-like interplay that leads to the full and grandiose ending.
