David of the White Rock - Traditional
This is an ancient Welsh air that was first published in Relics of the Welsh Bards in 1794. Dafydd (David) Owain was a famous Welsh bard who lived on a farm called Gareg Wen (The White Rock) in Eifionydd, Carnarnvonshire, North Wales. Tradition has it that on his deathbed he called for his Harp and composed this lovely melody, requesting that it be played at his funeral. Accordingly, it was later played at the parish church of Ynys-Cynhaiarn. Lyrics were later added by Ceiriog Hughes, which describe the melody's inspiration. This version for Concert Band retains all the beauty and simplicity of the original.

Chalumeau on the go - Mike Hannickel
Typically bands that play at this level have some Clarinet players who are comfortable above the break and others who are not. By staying below the break throughout, this light and spirited Clarinet section feature let's you give the entire section a bit of the limelight. This is a perfect vehicle to help your Clarinet section learn to shape a phrase, and the cheerful melody let's you program this piece anywhere you like. It's also a good selection to use to take the pressure off Brasses before a particularly taxing major work. Remind the critically important Clarinet section that you value their efforts as much as any other section. Breezy!

The Sound of my Life - Otto M. Schwarz
With this composition, Otto M. Schwarz shows himself totally capable of composing a work with a somber, almost melancholic character. Melody and counterpoint, accompanied by a peaceful harmony, play a kind of question and answer game in this short composition. The piece is written in a rather ABA form, with the perusiion complementing the whole very effectively.

The Memory of Our Native Place - Satoshi Yagisawa
Satoshi Yagisawa is well known for his dramatic symphonic band compositions. Even though he has written relatively few marches, they are also very popular: March Willing and Able is based on a chorale while March Bou Shu is based on a Japanese folk song. The Memory of Our Native Place is a rather unusual piece for Yagisawa, as it actually closely resembles a traditional march. The piece opens with a lively fanfare and is contrasted by the following theme. The trio features a chorale-like melody.

The Tournament - Carl Wittrock
Colour and versatility is the key to this composition in three movements by Carl Wittrock. The Tournament is the most versatile piece of music you could wish for. Movement 1 (March) is an excellent, lively concert opener. The 2nd movement (Ballad) is a calm interlude, which provides much freedom for expression. Movement 3 (Dance) sweeps the piece along to the inevitable Grande Finale: a rousing melody with prominent rhythmic support.

The Battle of Varlar - Rob Goorhuis
The work calls to mind an important event from the history of the city Coesfeld in Germany: the battle of Varlar, which took place in the year 1454. The composition presents us with a bird's eye view of the events: First of all, the consecration of the chapel on the Klinkenberg mountain is set to music in a hymn, after which the trumpets and trombones announce the imminent battle. In the subsequent fray not only the sounds of sabres and rapiers can clearly be heard but also the wailing of the wounded. When the Duke of Brunswick is wounded and captured by the troops of Walraf, Konrad von Diepen and his men march on Coesfeld in victory. Set against a festive melody, the hymnresounds in full glory.
