Silent Night (German: Stille Nacht, heilige Nacht) is a popular Christmas carol, composed in 1818 by Franz Xaver Gruber to lyrics by Joseph Mohr in the small town of Oberndorf bei Salzburg, Austria. It was declared an intangible cultural heritage by UNESCO in 2011. Over the years, because the original manuscript had been lost, Mohr's name was forgotten and although Gruber was known to be the composer, many people assumed the melody was composed by a famous composer, and it was variously attributed to Haydn, Mozart, or Beethoven. However, a manuscript was discovered in 1995 in Mohr's handwriting and dated by researchers as c. 1820. It states that Mohr wrote the words in 1816 when he was assigned to a pilgrim church in Mariapfarr, Austria, and shows that the music was composed by Gruber in 1818. This is the earliest manuscript that exists and the only one in Mohr's handwriting. The song has been recorded by a large number of singers across many music genres. This haunting setting by David Willcocks also includes slight textual alterations to the piece that has been translated into about 140 languages. This arrangement represents one in the Series of Band Arrangements compatible with David Willcocks' Carols for Choirs.

A cheerful piece full of rhythmic vitality; I wrote this shortly after completing Acentos Oscuras and it is the reverse of the style of that piece. It is fairly simple in form with just three small melodies that are each developed in form plus a central undeveloped, but quite lush, melody that is just repeated three times for the sheer joy of it. The mood of the music is very light and upbeat and is meant to capture that lovely feeling of a sunny, summer afternoon with no work and no worries!Duration: 4.58

Solo claves usher in the authentic Latin percussion section that sets the style for Pico Rivera. A simple but effective bass line joins the percussion section in establishing an interesting accompaniment for the syncopated melody that follows. Rich harmonies that utilize a variety of seventh chords dominate the second theme and the "stop time" percussion fills that open the coda. A lighthouse stands upon a shoreline to be a beacon for all ships coming into a harbour. This beacon guides ships to safety that otherwise might have been destroyed by the rocks of the shoreline. This beacon also serves as a hope to those ships that are lost at sea. The light also refers to wisdom, compassion, and love. John 1:5 of the bible states that, "The light shines in the darkness, but the darkness has not understood it" (NIV). The light in this passage refers to Jesus who was trying to reach out to a world that did not understand and was looking for hope.Duration: 6.00

£110.00Caramba! (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Blezard, William - Noble, Paul
William Blezard began writing Caramba! during a tour of New Zealand. Yet the musical basis of this work is about as far away from Kiwi culture as one can get. The word Caramba has several translations from the Spanish, including Dear Me!, or Goodness Me!, or perhaps more colloquially, Golly, or even Holy cow!. The entire work has an exotic feel to it that is so suggestive of things Spanish or Latin American. This is helped by the extensive use of percussion, and of course the brass is pure Latin American dance style. The demanding piano part is featured as almost a 'concertante'. In the Concert Band arrangement, the piano is highly desirable to replicate the original score, but the arrangement includes enough doubling and a short cut to make the piece entirely playable without the piano. Caramba! has all the hallmarks of a great piece of concert music that pleases as well as excites. For bands that want a challenge that is sure to bring an audience to its feet, Caramba! is the piece!

It is essentially a 12-beat pattern that can be subdivided as 6x2, 2x6, 4x3, or 3x4, which generates many of the polyrhythms that are common in African music. Time Lines is a single continuous work made up of four contrasting sections which are based on various aspects of African dance and choral music. The slow introduction introduces many of the rhythms that the piece is based on and is followed by a fast section which quotes a South African hymn. Abasundu Nabamhlope (the first line of which translates as 'Black and whites, let them give thanks together'. The chorale section which follows makes use of phrases from the hymn Nkosi Sikelel' iAfrika (Lord Bless Africa) which was written in 1897 and has since been adopted as the national anthem of several countries in southern Africa.
