(2003) Award-winning composer Michael Daugherty's first published work for young band describes a stretch of Interstate 75 that crosses through Florida's Everglades National Park. Alligator Alley celebrates this noble beast that has remained largely unchanged from prehistoric times. The first theme (Alligator's Theme) features the woodwinds (predominantly bassoons) while the second theme (Hunter's Theme) is performed by the brass. Program notes and staging suggestions are included in this marvelously descriptive work. Of the title, Puts writes, I decided to call it Charm because, for me, the music conjures up magic, good-luck charms and such, and I was also thinking of the other meaning of the word, that intangible quality possessed by certain people and places that truly can cast a spell. Composer Alex Shapiro's piece Paper Cut is reminiscent of a movie soundtrack to which the musicians can imagine their own dramatic scene. Paper Cut is written to make the players themselves part of the action with choreographed maneuvers that look as compelling as they sound. In fact, the band members don't even play their instruments until halfway into the piece - instead they play paper along with a prerecorded track! The unusual element of paper and the myriad sounds that can emerge from something so simple offers a fresh view of what music-making can be and opens everyone's ears to the sonic possibilities found among everyday objects. Although Paper Cut was composed with middle schoolers in mind, it's also suited to more advanced musicians, since the paper techniques and the skill of playing against a prerecorded track are interesting for all ages. To perform the piece, you'll need an audio system capable of playing the prerecorded audio tracks from a laptop computer via a small digital audio interface connected to an audio mixer. London is one of my favorite cities in the world, and in 2016 I was invited there to serve as an adjudicator for the London New Year's Day Parade and Gala Concerts. While I was there, I was fortunate to meet and spend time with The Lord Mayor of Westminster Councillor Steve Summers. While his title sounds formidable and intimidating, I found Steve to one of the nicest, most easygoing people I've ever met. And boy, does he love London! He was fond of saying that he had "the best job in the greatest city in the world." He spoke passionately about London and his favorite places in the city, and his enthusiasm was contagious. Some of his favorite places became some of my favorite places, and the inspiration for this piece. I hope that this work not only conveys the beauty and history of these iconic places, but Steve's deep and abiding love for them as well. I. Tower Bridge - The Tower Bridge was built over 120 years ago to ease road traffic while maintaining river access to the busy Pool of London docks. Its giant moveable roadways lift up for passing ships, making it a true engineering marvel. It is also one of the most iconic sites in London, and was used to display the Olympic Rings during the 2012 Olympics. II. St. Paul's (The Whispering Gallery) - The history of St. Paul's Cathedral goes back well over a thousand years, but construction on the current St. Paul's began in 1669 after a fire destroyed the earlier structure. The dome of St. Paul's Cathedral is a whispering gallery; you can whisper against the wall on the inside of the dome and it can be clearly heard on the other side of the dome over 100 ft. away. Imagine the secrets that have passed there... III. Trafalgar Square - The name commemorates the 1805 naval Battle of Trafalgar and is marked by Nelson's Column, a monument to Admiral Horatio Nelson, the hero of the Battle of Trafalgar. It is the heart of London; full of life and constant energy and home to iconic buildings including the National Gallery, St. Martin-in-the-Fields, Canada House and South Africa House. Londoners say that all roads in London lead to Trafalgar Square.

£99.95Sinfonietta No.2 - A Sign of the Times (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Wiffin, Rob
It was an interesting challenge to return to the form of a sinfonietta some twenty years after the last one. This work is not hugely problematic to play but was written without regard for technical demands, following a series of compositions that needed to take difficulty level into consideration. The work has five percussion parts but the tuned percussion, although desirable, can be omitted. As for the band parts, Oboe 2 is largely covered elsewhere but the colour of the cor anglais would be a definite enhancement to the overall sound. The work was written in 2025 when it seemed as if the world was a particularly volatile place.The first movement 'Foment' seeks to capture that menacing mood of unrest and the potential for violence that seemed to erupt without warning and without efforts to contain it from warmongers posing as peacemakers. The music is severe and focussed with just a short scherzo-like episode of levity to balance the quasi-military mood.'A Dream of Peace' takes a few moments to contemplate a different, more peaceful world and several ideas are considered before settling on the slow waltz-like melody. This uses a very tonal language but is given a particular hue by its use of sevenths and ninths and there are moments of stress which disrupt the tranquillity.In 'Call to Arms' the warlike mood returns with a sense of restless energy that drives the music to its conclusion.- Rob WiffinDuration: 14.00

Otto M. Schwarz was asked by a friend to compose a chorale for the funeral of his child. Lux Aeterna (The Eternal Light) is actually part of the requiem mass, but in this composition, there is no reference to the original Latin text. People who recount near-death experiences often report a bright light. The music moves back and forth between passages that are sad, optimistic, and imploring in nature, posing questions that cannot be answered. The end of the piece comes, however, with a conciliatory major chord that reflects the calm and warmth of this light that promises redemption.Duration: 3.45

The story of the Heinzellmannchen (Gnomes) is connected to the German city of Cologne. The gnomes were small creatures living underground but appeared during the night, when the people were asleep, doing all the work that had to be done in the city, so that the citizens of Cologne could be lazy, relaxing the whole day. At last, there was a tailor's wife getting so curious about the gnomes that she scattered dried peas onto the floor so that the gnomes slipped and fell, making a lot of noise. The gnomes got infuriated and disappeared forever and the citizens of Cologne must thereafter do all the work themselves.Kurt Noack (1893-1945) was a German composer, arranger and orchestra leader, working mainly with light music and marches. The characteristic piece Heinzellmannchens Wachtparade (Gnome's parade) from 1912 is his most famous composition, originally written for piano.This arrangement is made a little parodic, filled with joyful interjections, trying to give these little gnomes a bit of character, with pictures from Disney's Santa's workshop in mind.Duration: 7.00

£309.99Ninth Symphony (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Barnes, James
Premiered on 21 September, 2018 in Lawrence, Kansas by The University of Kansas Wind Ensemble (Dr. Paul Popiel, conducting), James Barnes' Ninth Symphony was composed between January and late June of that same year. This large work was commissioned by a consortium of twenty-one college bands, community bands, professional bands and individuals to help mark the 70th birthday of the composer (b. 1949). It is an expansive forty-minute work in four movements, of which the composer writes, "This is my last symphony...this work represents a compendium of all that I have learned during the fifty years of composing and scoring for this wonderful new medium: the modern wind band." The first movement, subtitled Elegy, is based around G minor. It is the longest movement of the symphony. Tragic and despondent in character, it is cast in sonata-allegro form. The second movement is entitled Scherzo. Barnes claims that "I have always wanted to write a waltz," and that is how this movement is cast, in a modified rondo form in D minor. In contrast to the mood of the first movement, the scherzo is a delightful posy of expansive melody, splashy color, humor and rhythm. The third movement, which is in a modified tertiary form, is entitled Night Music. In contrast to the scherzo, this movement begins with a mysterious incantation, first displayed by solo Alto Flute. The music becomes even darker and more mysterious, while overall the movement effectively expresses an "otherworldly" mood, ending with a solo soprano offstage which suddenly emerges, eerily singing a modified version of the opening incantation. Cast in sonata-allegro form, the fourth movement is most definitely a rousing Finale, beginning with a brilliant fanfare and undergoing several mood transformations before emerging into the final coda, ending the symphony with an energetic splash of color.
